As part of the panel, Mihajela Črnko (CCO at IRCAI) showcased various examples of African-based AI innovations featured in IRCAI’s Global Top 100 cohort, to demonstrate what they have to offer the continent. Missed DG INTPA's InfoPoint conference on AI investments for entrepreneurship? Rewatch it here: https://lnkd.in/e-DGa72Z
Head of Sector for Digital Economy in International Partnerships at the European Commission, Eng PhD, Msc in R&I
#DGINTPA conference: Artificial intelligence for boosting investment in #infrastructures and #entrepreneurship in #Africa Artificial Intelligence has been catching more and more the attention of the media as a new breakthrough has emerged - Generative AI - fascinating yet at times puzzling. This type of AI has the potential to revolutionize the way content is created, providing endless possibilities for industries such as media, advertising, and e-commerce. However, with these opportunities come significant concerns, including ethical, on privacy, and security. Keeping these fundamental challenges in mind, with this InfoPoint we aim to provide examples of what AI has to offer to our partner countries. Can AI-powered investments in infrastructure have the potential to drive economic growth and improve the quality of life in Africa? Can AI boost entrepreneurship in Africa? Speakers: Juan Arevalo Torres, Entrepreneur and data scientist Miguel Ángel Román, PhD, Entrepreneur and Artificial Intelligence scientist Mihajela Črnko, International Research Centre on Artificial Intelligence under the auspices of UNESCO Andrea Leone, PhD, Digital Economy DG INTPA. https://lnkd.in/e6iu-W4x European Commission International Research Center on Artificial Intelligence under the auspices of UNESCO #ArtificialIntelligence

This Monday (December 12th), we took part in the 2nd high-level event of the Digital for Development (D4D) Hub. It has been exactly one year since the EU-LAC digital dialogue platform has been launched - the EU’s platform that aims to step up the dialogue and engagement on digital issues with Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). Based on what we have been able to learn from this past year, we discussed how this digital cooperation can be improved. The first roundtable session - featuring our very own John Shawe-Taylor (Director at International Research Center on Artificial Intelligence under the auspices of UNESCO) - addressed how the digital partnership between the two continents can truly foster a more human-centred and inclusive digitalisation: What does it take for digital technologies like AI to be truly inclusive? How should we address the digital divide? How do regulatory frameworks help strengthen the digital dialogue between the two regions? The second roundtable session focused more specifically on the recently announced Global Gateway digital investment package for LAC. Speakers sought to answer the following questions: Which challenges does the LAC private sector face in advancing the digital economy in the region? Which instruments could be used to better connect SMEs on both sides of the ocean? Which investments should be prioritised? #EU #LAC #GlobalGateway #HumanCentricDigitalisation #InclusiveDigitalisation #D4DHub The recording of the event is available here: https://lnkd.in/eeYFnxRn

Earlier this month, IRCAI and the British Council facilitated an online dialogue with a focus group composed of students from Greece, Cyprus, Hungary and Germany. The guiding question of the event was “How can AI be used for the common good?”. In the first half of the event, three speakers were invited to share a couple of words on #AI4Sustainability from their own respective perspectives: Vanessa Nurock addressed the ethics of AI: How can AI be a social good? What should we look for when adopting AI technology? Are there cases where we should refrain from using AI? Veronika Stabej explained how policy makers can play their part: What can policymakers do to enable more equitable development, adoption, and use of AI? What do governments and international organisations do with the insights they receive from industry and academia? Joao Pita Costa presented his own AI-based SDG observatory, which can be used to identify the latest trends for the SDGs. A particular focus of the presentation was on SDG6 and how the tool can identify the latest news in this area, assess media sentiment on various water topics, and help policymakers gain data-driven insights that support evidence-based decision making. In the second half of the event, it was the young participants’ turn to share their own perspectives. Using an online whiteboard, the participants shared their hopes and fears about AI. While one group reflected on how AI can help us mitigate climate change, the other group thought about how AI can be used to address social inequalities, but also how it can exacerbate them at the same time. This online dialogue marked only the starting point of a whole programme that has been composed by IRCAI and the British Council. Called “Stronger Together: Artificial Intelligence for the Common Good”, the programme will include another dialogue along these lines in November 2022, as well as a series of face-to-face hackathons… and a final dialogue in December 2022 (where our young participants will address some high-level policymakers in the field of #AI4SDGs). Interested in taking part in the upcoming events of this programme? Stay tuned - we’ll be sharing more soon.
