UNECE’s work on sustainable energy is designed to improve access to affordable and clean energy for all and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the carbon footprint of the energy sector in the region. It promotes international policy dialogue and cooperation among governments, energy industries and other stakeholders. The focus is on energy efficiency, cleaner electricity production from fossil fuels, renewable energy, coal mine methane, gas, classification of energy and mineral reserves and resources, and energy security.

The 3rd Asia and Pacific Energy Forum just finished. Countries adopted an important Ministerial Declaration towards accelerating the energy transition. UNECE participated highlighting its work on building resilient energy systems, on energy connectivity, on critical raw materials… and our strong collaboration with our colleagues from ESCAP in Bangkok!
📢 Forum at InnoWeek-2023: Ways for Sustainable Hydrogen Production in Uzbekistan 🗓️ Date: 18 October 2023 🌍 Central Asia, including Uzbekistan, has significant potential for hydrogen production. However, the region faces challenges. UNECE is implementing a project on sustainable hydrogen production to enhance the capacity of UNECE member States in developing sustainable hydrogen production strategies and overcoming barriers. 🤝 At Innoweek-2023, UNECE will jointly organize the Forum on Ways for Sustainable Hydrogen Production. The discussions will cover topics such as low-carbon hydrogen production, opportunities for hydrogen export, local hydrogen demand, and potential pilot projects.

Last week, UNECE presented work pathways for countries to attain carbon neutral resilient energy systems, alongside international organizations including the GEIDCO(Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization) and the World Meteorological Organization.

The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe is developing a cross-cutting AI-powered platform that will offer a real-time interactive compendium of information and data resources on the resilience of energy systems. UNECE is collaborating with various partners (European Investment Bank (EIB), International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), International Energy Agency (IEA), International Telecommunication Union, OSCE, World Meteorological Organization, University of Zurich and The World Bank) on this platform. Another rendition of Sustainable Energy Week has wrapped up. Various experts and country representatives from across the region and beyond offered perspectives on how to design and build resilient energy systems in the UNECE region. Participants also engaged in discussions about managing critical raw materials, developing regional connected energy infrastructure, accelerating energy efficiency and digitalization, addressing coal mine methane reduction, discussing just transition developments in the coal mining sector, and scaling up-renewable energy uptake considering the low- and zero carbon technologies interplay. UNECE Sustainable Energy’s new website for the Carbon Neutrality Toolkit has been launched. This toolkit was developed by the UNECE Expert Community to help policy makers make informed decisions to achieve climate targets. It identifies technology and policy options to attain net-zero by 2050. Our website hosts resources such as technology briefs, roadmaps to carbon neutrality, and other resources.
