How to be a Great Mentor to Startups: We have a truly extraordinary group of ~100 mentors in the Techstars Economic Mobility Powered by Samvid Ventures accelerator - some brand new, and some who've been mentoring with Techstars for more than a decade. I just got to see them all in action over the past few weeks as they collectively held over 600 meetings with our founders during Mentor Madness, helping the companies very rapidly pressure test and refocus their business models. As we begin matching companies with lead mentors, who will work with them for the remaining two months of program, I am struck, as always, with how they are not only willing but enthusiastic about "giving first" to support these founders, who, in turn, have the potential to have a significant social impact. Exemplifying this desire to contribute, one first time mentor after getting matched was kind enough to ask me if there's a playbook for how to be most effective. For others who may be interested in that same thing, I've seen no better resource than Brad Feld's Mentor Manifesto, consisting of 18 points and links to blog posts explaining each one of them.
