Nature-Based Infrastructure Global Resource Centre
Think Tanks
Building with Nature for a Better Future. We are the leading global hub for nature-based infrastructure.
About us
The NBI Global Resource Centre aims to bring together key partners to establish a business case for Nature-Based Infrastructure (NBI). We provide data, training, and sector-specific valuations based on the latest innovations in systems thinking and financial modelling. Our Approach: The complexity of NBI requires us to take a systemic approach when we plan, value, and implement infrastructure projects. It is also essential to exchange knowledge and collaborate with partners in the field. Our work quantifies the positive impact of stewardship activities on ecosystems and demonstrates the cost efficiency of NBI. Our Objectives: - Improve the predictability of how well NBI will perform through more than 40 customized valuations globally. - Provide access to data on the performance of NBI through a new online database. - Strengthen the capacity of stakeholders to understand and value NBI through an open online course and customized training. - Connect and build constructive partnerships. The Nature-Based Infrastructure Global Resource Centre was launched in 2021 by IISD, together with the Global Environment Facility, the MAVA Foundation, and UNIDO. If you are interested in collaborating with us to develop customized valuations of your NBI projects, get in touch.

Heading to Geneva for #BuildingBridges2025? Don’t miss IISD's panel on the future of debt-for-nature swaps (D4NS). By linking debt relief with investment in conservation, debt-for-nature swaps can create opportunities for countries facing fiscal stress and climate risks. Today’s D4NS increasingly involve commercial creditors. As investors seek returns with measurable impact, they offer a complex but promising way to mobilize private capital for sustainable development. The challenge is to design them so they attract investors while ensuring credible, lasting impact. The discussion will examine what makes swaps work in practice, from credit enhancements and blended finance to sustainability-linked bonds, and ask what role financial institutions should play in scaling them responsibly. 📅 Thursday, October 2, 2025 | 15:30 to 17:00 CEST 🏫 Centre International de Conférences Genève - Room B (Level 0) 🗣️ Moderator: Nathalie Bernasconi-Osterwalder 🗣️Speakers: Louis Bourgeois, Nathalie Picarelli, Niki Doshi and Guillaume Bonnel 👉 Read more here: https://lnkd.in/dDBEee-2 💻 Can't make it to Building Bridges? The NBI Centre co-organized two capacity-building trainings under the SUNCASA project, first in Kigali and then in Johannesburg two weeks ago. The focus was on making the economic case for nature-based solutions (NbS) through cost-benefit analyses. 🌱 Over two days, city officials, policymakers, and local stakeholders dived into: ✅ how NbS can strengthen urban climate adaptation strategies, ✅ applying integrated cost–benefit analysis with Excel-based models, ✅ comparing NbS with grey infrastructure options, ✅ using systems thinking as part of the Sustainable Asset Valuation (SAVi) methodology. These hands-on sessions are helping local actors build a stronger investment case for NbS and lay the groundwork for a follow-up training on financing strategies in 2026. Participants also shaped future SUNCASA work on digital dashboards, policies and NbS financing. A big thank you to all participants, partners, and facilitators for the rich discussions and energy in the room! 🌍 Do you also want to make the case for building with nature? Join our free 5-week live program and master the tools to assess the economic performance and co-benefits of Nature-Based Infrastructure. Registration is now open. Yesterday at #ACS2, we had a great discussion on gender-responsive and climate-resilient NbS. Thanks to everyone who joined!

🌍 Today at the Africa Climate Summit #ACS2, the #SUNCASA project hosted a panel discussion on how #NatureBasedSolutions #NbS can foster just, equitable, and climate-resilient communities. The session featured insights from our local #GenderEquality and #SocialInclusion #GESI partners: - Hadas Temesgen - Hararghe Catholic Secretariat, #DireDawa, #Ethiopia - Ndiville Mokoena - Gender CC, #Johannesburg, #SouthAfrica The discussion explored the challenges of strategically integrating NbS into urban planning, while ensuring they do not reinforce existing inequalities in rapidly growing cities facing infrastructure gaps and deep-rooted social inequities. Panellists highlighted the SUNCASA approach to effective GESI strategies: 👉 Challenging Norms → Promoting positive social and gender norms that advance the rights of women and underrepresented groups. 👉 Creating Opportunities → Enabling the participation of women and marginalized groups in NbS implementation and decision-making processes. 👉 Building Bridges → Strengthening the capacity of both community organizations and local governments to engage in inclusive, gender-responsive NbS governance. 💬 The conversation also welcomed contributions from the audience, who shared their perspectives on urban NbS, governance, and the vital role of civil society and community-based organizations in planning, implementing, and monitoring NbS interventions. #ClimateAdaptation #UrbanResilience #Africa #ClimateJustice #ClimateFinance Samantha Boardley Tigist Mergya Ir. We are proud to see our SUNCASA work featured at #ACS2 in Addis Ababa! We presented findings from our recent work in Dire Dawa, Kigali, and Johannesburg, showing how nature-based solutions can deliver real value for cities: saving costs, reducing risks, and building resilience.

🌍 The Second Africa Climate Summit #ACS2 kicked off today in #AddisAbaba, Ethiopia, with our #SUNCASA project in the spotlight at the session “Harnessing #NbS for Urban #Resilience: Data, #Finance, and Community-Led Action.” Benjamin Simmons, SUNCASA Director, and Aklilu Fikresilassie, WRI’s Director of Cities for Africa, showcased how SUNCASA’s data-driven approach and cost–benefit analyses are helping cities strengthen the case for Nature-based Solutions (NbS) and access international funding. Recent SUNCASA trainings in #DireDawa (Ethiopia), #Kigali (Rwanda), and #Johannesburg (South Africa) equipped stakeholders to compare NbS with conventional “grey” infrastructure, apply cost–benefit tools, and integrate NbS into broader city strategies. 📊 Simmons also presented findings from the Sustainable Asset Valuation (#SAVi) assessment for Dire Dawa, showing that NbS interventions could save ETB 317.4 million (USD 2.28 million) in avoided health and flood repair costs for the City Administration. 🗞️ Learn more about #SUNCASA’s participation at #ACS2: https://lnkd.in/dce5TitS #ClimateAdaptation #UrbanResilience #NatureBasedSolutions #Africa #ClimateFinance Benjamin Simmons Aklilu Fikresilassie, PhD. 🌍 African cities are on the frontlines of climate change, facing floods, heat, and water stress. Nature-based solutions (NbS) can cut costs, protect people, and strengthen resilience, but how do we scale them? 📅 Join us at the African Climate Summit for the event Harnessing Nature-Based Solutions for Urban Resilience: Data, finance, and community-led action on 8 September at 10:00. This session will showcase how data, finance, and community leadership are unlocking NbS at scale. We will highlight some new results from the NBI Centre’s assessment in Dire Dawa. Our findings show that restoring the Dechatu River catchment is projected to save ETB 270 million in avoided damages and health costs by 2050—one example of how NbS can deliver real economic and social gains. We hope to see you there!
