This year's #WorldHealthDay theme is "my health, my right." It advocates for everyone's right to access quality health services, information, and housing, as well as freedom from discrimination. Occupational therapist and La Trobe alumna Di Winkler AM has spent her career championing these rights. Working alongside young patients with acute brain injuries, she became frustrated to see many of them discharged into the aged care system when they weren't making progress in rehab. She established the Summer Foundation Ltd to tackle this problem - fundamentally re-shaping how we consider housing for people with disability. In 2024 Di received La Trobe Distinguished Alumni Award for her passionate and practical research that continues to make changes across the healthcare system. Di completed a Bachelor of Applied Science (Occupational Therapy) (1990), Graduate Diploma Neurosciences (1994) and Master Applied Science (Occupational Therapy) (2003) at La Trobe University. #latrobealumni #summerfoundation

"Where can a passion for giving back lead you?" Meet Emily Griffin. A La Trobe graduate, who, after being drawn to the challenge of helping people, knew that pharmacy was the right direction for her. In her last seven years as a pharmacist, Emily has worked in regional and rural community and hospital pharmacies, as well as in metropolitan areas. She has had roles as a consultant, lecturer, teaching associate, and is a business owner and advocate for health and pharmacists on social media in her spare time. And most notably, Emily helped develop the Australian-first Voluntary Assisted Dying Statewide Pharmacy Service. Co-authoring guidelines and information for the Victorian Department of Health, she was pivotal in setting up the processes for this new area of pharmacy in Australia. Her passion to this profession and her work in the space led to the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia awarding her Victorian Early Career Pharmacist of the Year 2023. Raised in rural Victoria, Julie Oberin AM has dedicated her life to supporting women and children who experience domestic or family violence. 'I couldn't help thinking that I'd gone from milking cows at Goornong, just outside of Bendigo, to delivering a speech at the United Nations in front of hundreds of people. That was pretty amazing.' The La Trobe Bendigo alumna has spent more than 30 years keeping issues of gender equity and justice at the forefront of state, national and international policy - and recently received a 2024 La Trobe Distinguished Alumni Award. For International Women's Day we're proud to share Julie's story. ✊ Julie completed a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) (1996) and Master of Social Work (Coursework) (2001) at La Trobe University, Bendigo. #latrobealumni #latrobebendigo #IWD2024
