From discussions on crisis relief to climate change, I had the pleasure of meeting with different government leaders and partners on the 3rd day of the Spring Meetings. During my meeting with H.E. Murat Zaman, #Turkiye’s Deputy Minister of Finance, I reiterated IFC - International Finance Corporation’s commitment to helping Turkiye recover from the devastating earthquakes of February 6th. I also had a fruitful discussion with H.E. Saad Chami, #Lebanon’s Deputy Prime Minister, to explore solutions to foster the Lebanon Reform, Recovery, and Reconstruction Framework (3RF). I met with Mr. Hamed Yaqoob Sheikh Finance Secretary, of the #Pakistan Ministry of Finance and Dr. Kazim Niaz, Secretary, Ministry of Economic Affairs. Together, we can collaborate to achieve progress in critical sectors and adapt to the growing adverse impacts of climate change. In my meeting with CDP Cassa Depositi e Prestiti’s Paolo Lombardo, we discussed the pressing global challenges facing the regions, like climate change and the role partnerships can play to foster mitigation and adaptation efforts. Collaborations and partnerships are vital to promoting sustainable economic and social development across regions. It was a pleasure to discuss collaborations across Central Asian nations, Pakistan, and Afghanistan with Ashok Lavasa, Asian Development Bank (ADB)'s Vice President. Public-private partnerships, infrastructure development, and private sector growth can contribute significantly to achieving inclusive and sustainable growth in the region. Additionally, it was great meeting with EBRD's Nandita Parshad to explore avenues for collaboration in addressing the challenges of #ClimateChange and the private sector's role in enabling energy transition and improved infrastructure across regions. Today marks the beginning of the #SpringMeetings2023! I look forward to meeting delegations from across the regions I cover. Given the challenges facing the regions, the importance of these meetings cannot be overstated. The World Bank economists forecast that the #MENA region will grow 3% in 2023 and 3.1% in 2024. This is much lower than the growth rate of 5.8% in 2022. The response by central banks to raise rates to curb inflation is slowing economic activity while rising food prices are making it difficult for families to put meals on the table. The issues of food price inflation and food insecurity are global ones that are impacted by different factors. In Central Asia, if the pace of climate change is not slowed, crop yields are expected to decrease by 30% by 2050, leading to around 5.1 million internal climate migrants by then. In this context, it was a pleasure to start the #SpringMeetings with a critical discussion with Dr. Rola Dashti of United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) on how to best support the private sector —SMEs particularly—, and youth in the #Arab region. Over the next few days, topics like climate change, food insecurity, employment, gender, youth, and many more will be addressed during the Spring Meetings. We must come together to have constructive discussions about supporting the private sector and navigating this difficult period. Fast, innovative, and private sector-led responses are key to tackling the looming threat of #climatechange. #Greenbond, a financial instrument that raises funds from impact investors to finance green projects, is an effective solution. In our new video series #IFCExpertTalks, IFC - International Finance Corporation senior investment officer Khaled Qutob explains why this innovative tool is ideal for countries with heightened risk, such as #Jordan and how partnering with Jordan Kuwait Bank to launch the country’s 1st green bond will help bolster its green agenda.
