Africa’s pension funds are becoming vital sources of local, long-term finance with the potential to channel assets toward strategic, sustainable projects such as affordable housing and infrastructure. With support from the Joint Capital Markets Program (J-CAP) – an initiative from IFC - International Finance Corporation and The World Bank – the Kenya Pension Funds Investment Consortium (KEPFIC) has grown to 24 member funds with $5 billion in assets – about one third of Kenya’s total pension pot. KEPFIC has so far mobilized $113 million into two housing projects, with a road project in the pipeline. By identifying safe, investment-grade projects and enabling smaller, fragmented pension funds to pool their resources, KEPFIC is able to channel underused pension funds toward such critical development projects.
