Cooling was a blind spot in the energy transition. But more recently, it has been at the forefront of government action to tackle extreme heat and the #climatecrisis. Led by the UN Environment Programme, the Cool Coalition joined the Government of Colombia, ONUDI Colombia, and partners including the IFC - International Finance Corporation this week for a study trip to #Singapore with country delegates and cooling stakeholders, where they explored the use of passive and district cooling approaches to provide thermal comfort for all and learn about initiatives that will help deliver climate-friendly and energy-efficient cooling at scale. The trip included a workshop hosted by IFC on financing for district cooling projects, presented by Upasana Varma, IFC’s Global Lead for Municipal Finance.

#AsiaPacific has become the largest emitter of greenhouse gases, producing about half the world’s carbon dioxide with buildings account for more than 30 percent of the total energy use in fast-growing economies like Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines. That is why it is critical to improve energy and resource-efficiency aspects in buildings to reduce carbon footprints. A big shoutout to the Ecoloft serviced apartments in Cikarang in the Bekasi regency east of the capital Jakarta that had been awarded the first EDGE Zero Carbon Certification in #Indonesia. The green aspects along with other energy efficiency measures that can cover 50 percent of its electricity consumption, is estimated to have delivered energy savings of 82 percent. The use of renewable energy as well as the purchase of carbon offsets from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has enabled the development to reduce its carbon footprint to zero, cutting emissions by as much as of 95 tons per year, which is equivalent to planting around 1,500 trees. http://wrld.bg/6XgR50OhZLZ
