Fogarty Fellowship for MPH Students in Partnership with George Washington University MPH Fogarty fellowship is open to Armenian citizens with a medical degree (M.D.), dentistry degree (D.D.S. or D.M.D.), or doctorate in science admitted to the AUA Master of Public Health (MPH) program. Each selected fellow will receive 100% tuition coverage, funds to conduct research on non-communicable disease social determinants, participate in international scientific conferences, and publish their capstone projects in peer-reviewed international journals. The target demographic is mid-career professionals working in health organizations or clinics with a desire to strengthen their research skills, present their work internationally, and publish. In November 2023, the Garo Meghrigian Institute for Preventive Ophthalmology (Meghrigian Institute) of the American University of Armenia (AUA) Turpanjian College of Health Sciences, with assistance from the Republic of Armenia Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, launched an eye screening program for socially vulnerable children. The initiative aimed to decrease visual impairment among the target population through the provision of comprehensive ophthalmic examination and the distribution of eyeglasses to those in need. The staff of the Meghrigian Institute visited the Ajapnyak Children’s Social Care Center and Zatik Child Assistance Center in Yerevan, both of which serve socially vulnerable and orphaned children. Overall, 161 out of 170 children participated in the detailed eye screenings.

The Fall 2023 Semester marked an important milestone in delineating and advancing the role of a community health nurse in Yerevan, Armenia. Students in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program of the Gerald & Patricia Turpanjian College of Health Sciences (CHS) at the American University of Armenia (AUA) had the opportunity to visit various community centers and provide services to vulnerable populations, including children and older adults, as part of the BSN 210: Community and Public Health Nursing course. As part of the General Education course, PH203 Human Nutrition and Health developed and taught by Gerald & Patricia Turpanjian College of Health Sciences (CHS) Visiting Associate Professor Dr. Kim Hekimian; also Associate Professor of Nutrition at Columbia University and advisor to the Republic of Armenia Minister of Health, and co-taught by CHS Visiting Lecturer Arev Mazloumian, the students enrolled in the course took on the project of evaluating the cafeteria menu options and propose improvements based on their findings.
