But with human error still a leading cause of fatal crashes, self-driving cars can help save many of the 1.25 million people around the world who are killed in traffic accidents every year.

We want cleaner air and to preserve our planet for future generations, which is why today’s cars are more fuel-efficient and why more of us are embracing environmentally conscious options. 

We want the freedom of jumping in a car and heading across town or across the country to spend time with family or explore new landscapes. But our love affair with our cars is often tempered by traffic, which drives us to frustration.

The good news is that our generation has the ambition, the talent and the technology to realize the safer, better and more sustainable world we want. General Motors has committed itself to leading the way toward this future, guided by our vision of zero crashes, zero emissions and zero congestion.

We see a future of zero crashes where, instead of trying to protect passengers during and after a crash, we harness new technologies to prevent crashes from happening in the first place. With safety as General Motors’ number one priority, we’ll keep innovating. Drowsy, distracted or impaired drivers will have another way home. No more crashes. One day, no more lives lost.

And, as America’s largest automaker, GM has the right scale. In contrast to companies that have built a small number of self-driving cars, our 150 manufacturing facilities can produce some 9 million vehicles a year, giving GM the capability to test and manufacture the next generation of electric and autonomous vehicles at scale.

We’re already turning our vision into reality.

We’re leading on electric vehicles with the Chevy Bolt EV — the top-selling affordable electric car. And we’ll continue to build momentum in the weeks and years ahead with an entire slate of new electric vehicles. 

We’re positioned to lead on autonomous driving, which avoids crashes and improves safety. In the coming months, we’ll take the next bold steps in testing our autonomous technology as we lead the way to fully self-driving vehicles without any human driver as a backup.

We’re leading on connectivity — connecting vehicles to each other, and, in the years ahead, to the traffic lights and roads around them so that vehicles know how to avoid backups and collisions, choose the most efficient routes and reduce congestion. 

Finally, we’ll increasingly lead in vehicle sharing. Right now — for the first time ever, anywhere — our talented engineers at Cruise Automation in San Francisco are using an app to hail a self-driving Chevy Bolt EV.
