The last time I travelled on an airplane (before the world changed due to Covid 19), I passed the time happily on the long flight listening to the audiobook version of ‘Peace is Every Step’ by Vietnamese Monk and Zen Master Thich Nhat Hahn.
One chapter really struck a chord with me: ‘What’s Not Wrong?’
Neuroscience tells us that as humans we are hardwired for negativity. It’s all part of our primitive and instinctual defence mechanism which still serves a purpose when we are tuned in, present and aware of our surroundings and real potential danger.
Yet focussing on negativity and looking for what’s wrong in life and in our business just sets us on a downward spiral.
We lose our ability to see the bigger picture, we forget how resourceful and creative we truly are, and we start to compare ourselves with others who apparently have everything we didn’t even think we wanted or needed.
Everyone is selling us their version of the dream. But what is YOUR dream?
- Looking for love? Who already loves and appreciates you?
- Need more customers? How much do you appreciate the customers or prospects you already have?
- Want to build a successful business? How much value have you already created? and How often do you take time to celebrate the small successes along the way?
“Wherever we are, any time, we have the capacity to enjoy the sunshine, the presence of each other , the wonder of our breathing. We don’t have to travel anywhere else to do it. We can be in touch with these things right now.”
I don’t know if or when I will fly again. For now, I can look up at the skies, see the occasional distant plane flying overhead glinting in the sunshine and marvel at the spirit of the pioneers who ignored the pessimism of their peers of the time and decided they could and would FLY.
I am still learning ….
What's NOT Wrong for you?
