NTT and the IOWN (Innovative Optical and Wireless Network) initiative

Heading to the NTT Experience Center in San Francisco this week to learn more about IOWN (Innovative Optical and Wireless Network) initiative

IOWN is an initiative spearheaded by NTT, Intel Corporation and Sony to develop the next generation of network and information processing infrastructure, including terminals that can provide high-speed, high-capacity communication.

The initiative aims to create a more sustainable infrastructure that overcomes the limitations of existing infrastructure with a new communication platform consisting of an All-Photonics Network, which includes silicon photonics, edge computing and wireless distributed computing. This new infrastructure will unlock a myriad of fascinating applications, including #6G and beyond, remote surgeries, e-sports, autonomous technologies, mobility management (e.g. collection and processing of data from vehicles and roadside sensors), smart grid applications and more.

NTT R&D’s goal is to finalize specifications in 2024 and realizing the initiative in 2030.
