My Journey with Infosys
I am Deepa and am based out of the Infosys office in Toronto, Canada. I work as a ‘Technology Lead’ for a utility client. I develop and maintain Microsoft .Net based applications, mentor my offshore team, and contribute to Cloud / DevOps implementations. My typical day at work looks something like this: I usually start my work at 9:00 am, collaboratively plan my day, and ensure that priority work gets done first, then take up other tasks, like coordination with clients, business for status updates, requirements clarification etc., and spend the rest of my time coding and learning.
Before joining Infosys, I was working part time (remote) with a consultancy that was designing Azure Cloud implementations for the U.S. Government’s Small Business Administration. This was after a long career break and it wasn’t easy for me to get back in the game after a long gap amidst the rapidly evolving technologies and skills. I utilized my gap in enhancing my skills and completed the cloud certifications which helped me re-join the industry.
I graduated in 2005 and Infosys did a campus hiring which I couldn’t get through unfortunately. Infosys is a well-recognized company and having missed that opportunity to work with them made me sad. I moved on, worked with different IT companies and to my surprise, ten years later, I received a call from the Infosys talent management regarding an opportunity which was based out of Baltimore, while I was settled with my family in Boston. Though this project required a location change, I still wanted to give it a try for two reasons – one, they considered my profile even knowing the fact that I had a break from career and second, I know for a fact and have heard so much about how good the work culture at Infosys is.
I was selected for the opportunity and I relocated to Baltimore with my son while my husband continued to live in Boston. I am glad that I made that decision, because that was the best workplace and the best team I had in my whole career. They gave me the chance to explore, learn and the freedom to voice my concerns and opinions. The management has always been supportive and gave constructive guidance which helped me grow and take up responsibilities.
We moved to Canada when I was expecting my second child and I took a break from working at Infosys. Two months after my baby was born, my project manager reached out to me and asked if I would be open for a position in Toronto as our clients had expanded their operations to Canada. I had no reasons to say ‘No’ to that opportunity for all the reasons I have quoted above. The only concern I had was that my baby was just 2 months old and I had to balance the time and work accordingly. The team extended their support more than what I could ask for. I continued to raise my baby while I was exceling in my work. Especially during the pandemic times, its extremely important that the team and management understands your situation and concerns and am very lucky I have that.
Infosys Canada is an organization with lot of opportunities and challenges. It has global presence with a lot of prestigious customers. Working at Infosys is very satisfactory, enriching and fun. There was never a dull moment at work. Also, when it comes to up-skilling, Infosys encourages the employees to pick and choose from a plethora of technologies / skills. This makes the learning process easier. People should join Infosys if they really need a perfect work-life balance. Though some days are hard, it gives a feeling of contentment and joy most of the days.
