Innovative Healthcare Delivery Models? Yes, Please!

Innovative Healthcare Delivery Models? Yes, Please!

We are witnessing a slow but steady evolution of business models in most healthcare markets. It is highly likely that within the next decade the landscape will be transformed in many markets. To mention some that I see on the horizon: a reduction in standalone hospitals, more integration between the type and levels of care, a shift from fee-for-service charging to capitation or bundled payments that shares risk more fairly between insurers and providers.

Two guiding principles need to underpin all these innovations in care models:

 1.     Better outcomes for patients

2.     A more efficient system.

Through my work as a health sector specialist at IFC I have been fortunate to review projects in 25+ countries. Even within the relatively short period of five years I have been doing this, I have noticed a clear trend towards emerging models of care that help patients by giving them better access and more coordinated care. These models have the potential to be expanded into new markets and investors are increasingly doing this. Emerging markets offer considerable opportunity for the private sector.

This issue will be front and center in conversations taking place at our upcoming Global Private Healthcare Conference in Miami on March 27–28. In addition to facilitated networking, we are organizing a specific panel on innovative care delivery that will tackle the following questions:

  • How do we implement innovative business models? What lessons can we share?
  • How to gain the trust and buy-in of healthcare staff and patients?
  • How do investors tend to react to innovative service models?
  • How can a model that succeeds in one country be made to work elsewhere?
  • What are the common challenges that demand innovative solutions—for example cost, quality, or coordination?
  • Are there any regulation-related issues to be considered that impact rollout?
  • What would you do differently in the future?

This panel will be moderated by Carmen De Paula, IFC Principal Investment Officer. Panelists will be: Irlau Machado Filho, CEO, Intermedica; Hend El Sherbini, CEO, IDH; Javier Lozano, CEO, Clinicas Del Azucar; and Sanjay Pathak, COO, CVS MinuteClinic Please join us!
