In-Memory Computing Technologies will drive over $15 billion in spending by 2022

The digitalization of businesses generates an inexhaustible demand for faster performance, greater scalability and deeper real-time insight. This is boosting adoption of in-memory computing (IMC)-enabling technology and also boosting consolidation of the market.

#Gartner estimates that the stand-alone IMC-enabling application infrastructure market will reach approximately $10 billion by year-end 2017, not including IMC capabilities that are also available as a feature of larger software suites from several large vendors.Considering the current and future demand for IMC, the revenue in this market should exceed $15 billion by year-end 2021. The majority of revenue will continue to come from the IMDBMS and in-memory analytics (visual data discovery) segments, which together account for three-quarters of today's current IMC-enabling application infrastructure spending.

The remaining quarter of the IMC market is represented by the components that are related to the application infrastructure and middleware (AIM) space: IMDGs (stand-alone), high-performance message infrastructure and stream analytics platforms. The IMC capabilities related to AIM generated almost $1 billion in spending in 2015.

They are set to generate more than $2.3 billion by the end of 2020, with a 2015 through 2020 compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of more than 20%. This is a solid performance when compared with the AIM market (7.0% CAGR) and the overall software market (6.8% CAGR) (see "Forecast: In-Memory Computing Platforms (AIM Components), Worldwide, 2015-2020" ). For a detailed list and maturity position of the most relevant IMC technologies, see "Hype Cycle for In-Memory Computing Technology, 2017."
