Geneva Academy’s new Master of Advanced Studies in Transitional Justice - Update
We look forward to the start of the Geneva Academy’s new Master of Advanced Studies in Transitional Justice, Human Rights and the Rule of Law
There are just three months left before the start of our new one-year master programme in transitional justice, human rights and the rule of law! With September just around the corner, we are putting the final touches to the programme and get ready to welcome our students at the Geneva Academy.
Selecting future students out of more than 200 highly qualified applications was not an easy task. Following a highly competitive selection process, we look forward to an exciting academic year and to welcome students from different backgrounds and countries- including Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Iran, Egypt, the DRC and Colombia – who want to deepen their knowledge in the field of transitional justice, human rights and the rule of law.
They will have the opportunity to learn from and exchange with prominent scholars and practitioners such as Professor William Schabas, Dr Rama Mani and Professor Christof Heyns, the current UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, the UN Special Rapporteur on transitional justice Pablo de Greiff, ICTJ Director David Tolbert and Professor Fionnuala Ní Aoláin from the Ulster University’s Institute for Transitional Justice.
Via our law clinic and integrated professional activities with leading organizations - such as the International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ), OHCHR, the Inter-American Commission for Human Rights, Swisspeace or the Center for Legal and Social Studies (CELS) - our students will also be able to put theory into practice, preparing them for a future career in the field of transitional justice and human rights.
To inaugurate the academic year and a series of events, a performance by our Professor Dr Rama Mani – based on real-life experiences with war-affected populations and combatants – will explore the dynamics of war and peace via theatre, music and poetry.
Given the importance of culture in addressing past wounds and accompanying societies and victims in the aftermath of violent conflict and oppressive rule, our one-week spring school, scheduled for April 2017, will explore the topic of “Culture, Memory and Transitional Justice with leading thinkers and artists in this still relatively under-explored area of study and practice.
More information will be coming soon. So stay tuned!
All the best,
Frank Haldemann and Thomas Unger
