Circular economy requires collective effort from the supportive market mechanism and positive policy response. Disruptive technology opens up possibilities and brings circularity into conversation, that is only half of the job done; policy and market support are then necessary to extend the technology's shelflife.

Human beings and their behaviour is at the center of sustainability challenge. So any innovative copulation of any emerging technologies : IOT, Cloud, Mobile with wealth of existing and emerging knowledge about human behaviour facilitated by power of big data can drive circular economy. Collaborative mind is the key word as "intellectual incest" is the key reason for missing great disruptive opportunities that can make a better world.

Some "buzz words" though can have a very specific meaning. As I pointed out in the following referenced IBM developerWorks article, disruptive innovation is defined as having the potential of "allowing a whole new population of consumers access to a product or service that was historically only accessible to consumers with a lot of money or a lot of skill" http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/library/x-ind-disrubl/index.html In that sense, the GoPro camera was a disruptive innovation - opened up video production to an entirely new population of consumers.

I think we should be careful of Buzz words in a language because they turn sensible people off. So "disruptive", "growth hacking", "sharing economy" et al I try to avoid . Tech doesn't have to be disruptive. Sometimes you create a brand new market because the solution is unique or super innovative like @innoverne or a mash up of different solutions applied differently like @WarpIt_ . To apply the same idea to a product: You could even say that GoPro didn't disrupt anyone. They took several different solutions and mashed them together to create the market for body cams.

@FreyaBurton and @Mariano Garces Gregorio raise the great point about 3D printing. This could actually democratise manufacturing. I am putting my blue sky thinking cap on here, but imagine if each community had it’s own 3D printer? Where each household fed in their waste plastic packaging to produce the plastic products that were required. Printing composters, tools and toys for the community to share on @asparetoshare ? Build your own I phone anyone? @JakobRutqvist and @Gregory Jaros talk about mobile and geo locational which is right up there. Imagine being able to match wants and needs in a city of strangers immediately, in a way which both sides gain. Accessing surplus assets has boomed and it is all down to mobile. @Iris van Wanrooij talks about material and this is important…the mushroom packaging by Ecovative! So simple and effective. Formed mycelium.I think the sky (or rather under the ground) is the limit for mushroom packaging. If I was to pick a digital solution I have seen with the most potential to bring CE to life quicker it would be the @innoverne solution . If you have not looked at the software I would urge you to. @ChrisHoskins Corporates will own CE. Products are causing environmental degradation. As products and models improve and are built for upgrade , take back or lease, there needs to be a tracking mechanism from manufacturer/retailer >customer> and back again. Whenever I think about CE on my own I always come back to the cherry tree story in the Bill Macdonough book Cradle to Cradle. The cherry tree is completely circular. I guess you could call the tiny cellular level processes and incremental evolutionary disruptions. All of the above could fit into that story.

There's the question I've been waiting for. Today I've been crunching the first half of January data from the Power Meters connected to the Bundles Washing machines and dryers. Connecting them to the internet (internet of things) enables us to get the data. (Big) Data-analysis enables to exactly know what the appliance is doing and how to use it most effectively. But more important the data analysis enables to understand how customers (want to) use the appliance. And in combination with mobile customer engagement a whole new experience of using the appliance is enabled. Sorting fabrics, chosing settings and even timing it to let it run on renewable energy is possible with the digitalization. The enhanced customer experience and the extended productivity of resources (both by adding just a small piece of scalable technology) is what makes the circular business model profitable and... yes... possible today. Bundles' techpartner Onzo Ltd. surprises Miele and Bundles every month with new insights from the data. This month: detection of overdosing and thus underperforming spin-cycles, which is easy to solve by the user and prevents dissatisfying laundry results. Try to apply technology that doesn't require a lot of resources.

Cloud computing has been the most disruptive technological advancement we’ve seen yet. Consider the sharing economy. Hundreds of compelling new businesses, including Uber, AirBnB, and Kickstarter, are transforming how goods and services are created, procured, and sold. The internet, cloud computing, and mobile broadband makes the sharing economy possible. Similarly, content subscription services like Netflix and Spotify are displacing many physical goods with on-demand digitized alternatives. And software-as-a-service (SaaS) models built on cheap and scalable data storage and high broadband penetration have allow companies to forgo owning IT infrastructure. The result is reduced footprint of hardware and electricity use for millions of business worldwide.

Mobile and GPS location services are the key enablers for many of the pioneers in the circular economy. In fact players like Uber and Lyft are arguable not circular economy companies, but are really technology companies using technical innovations to disrupt existing business models. Besides mobile (including camera and bar code scan) and GPS, the other key component is rating systems. Being able to positively or negatively rate the AirBNB house you stayed in, that Uber driver, etc. is what expands the trust factor and allows people to incur the additional risk of staying in a stranger’s apartment with that stranger sleeping in the room next door. Renting rooms has always existed, but AirBNB - and their use of mobile, GPS location services and rating systems – has made it more efficient and less risky, thereby opening the door for hosts and renters who might not have previously had the courage to enter the market. At Spare to Share we are utilizing these technology tools (internet, mobile, GPS awareness) to enable tracking systems and rating systems that allow our customers to be comfortable lending their goods and services to folks they have very little in common with. Without these components some sharing would still happen as it always has; limited to friends. Technology allows these goodwill transactions to stretch beyond people you already know, and maybe make some new connections in the process.
