ArgChiBolVolc Project

ArgChiBolVolc Project

I am delighted to announce that I am in South America for 6 weeks for a project, ArgChiBolVolc, funded by the INSU Institute of French CNRS, in collaboration with Pablo Grosse (CONICET and Miguel Lillo Foundation, Argentina). The main field trip objective is to sample lavas from the Mio-Pléistocene volcanoes of the Argentine and Chilean Puna (Central Volcanic Zone of the Andes). Back at the GEOPS laboratory (Université Paris-Saclay), these rocks will be dated by the unspiked K-Ar method, and the morphology of the volcanoes will be analysed using digital topography (DEM). One of the objectives of this project is to establish correlations between the degree of dismantling of these volcanoes and the climatic variations that have prevailed since their construction.

Our sampling tools
Our type of target: lava flow from stratovolcanoes
Thanks to the aridity, the rock quality is quite good (even as old as 10 Ma)
Some lava is not so far from the track, we've just created.
Others require a bit longer walk and ascent
We sampled up to 5500 m as here, just above these nice so-called penitentes snow formations
Work in collaboration with Walter Ariel Báez and Emilce Bustos from Salta CONICET volcanology Lab.
Some local fauna (vicuna, wild South American camelid)
Beautiful desert area
International camp, in the Chile sector (also with Daniel Bertin, from Sernageomin)
