Engagement Ambien
Last week we reviewed the results of a recent poll that measured what's keeping HR Executives up at night.
The results were not surprising. HR Executives want to keep their employees engaged, retain top talent, and to develop the leaders of tomorrow. What is surprising is that said Executives are squeezing blood from a tapped stone to find solutions.
Vendors in the business of selling logo-ed lamps have no place in measuring Employee Engagement.
We also reviewed the off-the-shelf vendor process in providing HR Services: develop a slanted survey, pretend to understand and create a transaction.
Here's a better approach!
The Real Feedback
Most employee surveys are ineffective because they ask irrelevant questions, are sent from a place of distrust and can be easily gamed to keep employees out of trouble. What a waste!
One Size Does Not Fit All
Employee Engagement involves high-touch strategy based in performance-driven workforce objectives. Employee Recognition is a benefit.
Fulfillment houses are incapable of creating Employee Engagement strategy. Implementing "one-size-fits-all" technology is as effective as giving every employee the same gift on their service anniversary.
After you've gathered specific feedback from YOUR employees, formulate an Engagement strategy that is totally unique to YOUR organization.
Game Mechanics Drive Performance
You've asked the right questions and designed a one-of-a-kind engagement strategy. Now it's time to create measurable program metrics that will ensure performance enhancement.
It's been said that Employee Recognition and Gamification do not mix. Probably True!
1. Employee Recognition is a Transaction.
2. Gamification is a word made up to sell technology.
Employee Engagement is driven by business critical behaviors to produce measurable business results. Game Mechanics have been a critical element in measuring human motivation long before the creation of badging apps.
Don't Believe Me? Take it from Tom Chatfield....
HR Executives - I would say it is time for you to sleep soundly but you'll be so excited after reading this post that you'll leap out of bed and into the workplace.
For far too long fulfillment houses have been padding their margins by selling your employees outdated gifts. More "companies" are emerging with technology platforms designed by interns.... And they call it Engagement...?
A disingenuous pursuit of partnership in the HR Services space will produce one result:
An Insult To Your Employees Intelligence!
10 year old surveys, Logo-ed lamps and/or multi-tenant apps that my son could design will not solve the Engagement Crisis.
I know you are too smart to put up with that anymore!
True business partners allow their client's objectives to create totally unique solutions.
True business partners design transformational business improvement solutions (not off-the-shelf transactions)!
True business partners make human connections and do not compromise by implementing something that every other company offers.

9yGood recognition calls for specifics. But other than copy and paste nearly everything you say and follow that with 'Yes!" I can't think of anything other to say than "I love this post!"
