The Ministry of Stories is a creative writing and mentoring centre for young people in east London. It inspires 8-18 year olds through the power of storytelling, unleashing their imaginations, building their confidence and self-respect and enhancing their ability to communicate. I was commissioned along with another poet to design and lead a series of exciting and engaging spoken word workshops for 14-18 years olds.
Newham Word Champions is a spoken word project to motivate and inspire young people to articulate their life experiences, opinions and aspirations. I collaboratively devised and delivered workshops that inspired young people to write, edit and perform their own original poems. We work with over 100 young people in total at Kingsford Community School in Newham. A team of 9 young writers was then selected; these writers are now known as the Unexpected Poets. We planned and delivered five classroom based workshops to develop their work. Four young people performed an original group poem, one individual performed a solo poem and four performed individual speeches at Theatre Royal Stratford East, a 500 seat theatre.
Commissioned to design a collaborative event for Ping! and Elephant at the Roundhouse. Also commissioned to lead a unique spoken word and ping pong workshop in Gillett Square in Hackney.
Received a nationally recognised award for volunteering over 50 hours to my local community.
