And it’s a wrap to day 1 of the AnitaB.org's #vGHC2021 ✨ 👩🏻💻 I had the opportunity to attend the data science track meetup wherein we discussed the scope of big data in the industry and what forms big data? What are the steps to ensure that more women are able to take up data science as a career? What should be the data science courses crafted upon to bridge the gaps between book learning to practical implementation. 👩🏻💻 With this, I also went through “A peek into the real world of data science: a move beyond classroom” by Surina Puri. My takeaways from this session were huge. This session answered the one question that was on my mind since I stepped into #data science. She spoke on how to bridge the gap from what we learn in formal courses to when we get hired into a data science role. For example, moving from working on well-defined readymade problems to identifying a problem on your own. Or from getting a cleaned data set to learning how to curate your own dataset or being able to look for one yourself. 👩🏻💻 Another session that I attended was the “A11y best practices” by Katherine Lewis and Divya Manepalli. From starting off with basics as to how #Accessibility is shortened to #A11y, to teaching how to make accessible presentations; they covered it all. I’ve learnt about the different types of disabilities from the Microsoft Inclusive Design guide, the use of header tags, proper use of alt tags for photos on the website and also how to use the accessibility checkers with proper combinations of screen readers. Overall, a very constructive day and a lot of thoughts to think about when going to bed.
