🇪🇹 WHO Grants Ethiopia Level 3 Drug Regulation Status 🇪🇹 The Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority EFDA has achieved the World Health Organization’s WHO Maturity Level 3 ML3 for its medicines regulatory system. This places Ethiopia among a select group of African nations recognized for stable and well-functioning regulatory systems. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention Africa CDC confirmed this milestone, commending Ethiopia for strengthening its oversight of medicine safety, quality, and effectiveness. Ethiopia now joins countries like Egypt, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Senegal, and Rwanda, which have also attained WHO ML3 status. This recognition is seen as a major step in improving public health and ensuring access to high-quality medical products. Dr. Jean Kaseya, Director General of Africa CDC, highlighted that strong regulatory systems are crucial for health security and advancing Africa’s pharmaceutical manufacturing goals. Ethiopia is now eligible to join a collaboration among Africa’s leading medicines regulators, focusing on regulatory efficiency, mutual recognition, and cooperation. Building an Enabling Policy Environment After nearly four years of advocating for policy change in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the DRC government has officially published a Decree that for the first time offer a clear legal pathway for private pharmaceutical distributors to participate in the public health supply chain system. By leveraging this critical private sector resource in DRC more communities will have access to health products when and where they need them. The Decree officially signed by the DRC Prime Minister will: 📈Increase participation of certified private pharmaceutical distributors in the public health supply chain 💪Ensure DRC private distributors meet international quality standards 💸Increase donor funding towards using local private distributors in DRC This is a huge milestone for the DRC government and all the partners that contributed to making this happen.
