A new License Agreement highlights how partnerships can shape the fight against malaria. 🔎 The deal: Parties: Medincell & Medicines Patent Pool (MPP) Product: mdc-STM — a 3-month injectable ivermectin formulation using MedinCell’s BEPO® technology Scope: MPP receives rights to sublicense patents & know-how for LMIC markets Commitments: ✅ Affordable pricing ✅ Timely & sufficient supply ✅ Product registration in key countries ✅ Development aligned with quality standards 📌 These commitments, required under MedinCell’s related Unitaid grant, will flow through to all MPP sublicensees. The document reveals important facts about critical medicines in the EU: 🔹There are currently 276 active substances on the Union List of Critical Medicines, published end of 2023, covering more than 18’000 products 🔹Critical medicinal products are far from a niche – they represented EUR 30 billion in sales in 2023 🔹The EU market for critical medicines is concentrated in 4 countries – France, Germany, Italy & Spain - which account for 70% of the sales The Critical Medicines Act seeks to strengthen the security of supply and availability of critical medicines and improve the availability of medicines for which there is a market failure, such as orphan medicines or novel antibiotics. GIRP joins public health authorities in voicing a serious warning: the European Medicines Agency and national regulators are reporting a sharp rise in illegal online sales of GLP-1 receptor agonists, including #semaglutide, #liraglutide, and #tirzepatide, marketed under popular brand names.
