Thirteen-year-old Azuz’s parents used to celebrate every educational milestone that he and his siblings achieved. When their home Al Fasher, Sudan, was hit by shelling, they knew it was time to leave. Their journey to a site for people internally displaced in Atbara, in northern Sudan, lasted more than a month. “All of us, me and my siblings were scared throughout the entire journey until we reached here,” Azuz shares. They feel safer and more at peace now at the site. And having missed school earlier, he and his siblings are catching up on lessons through a UNICEF-supported alternative learning programme. Azuz focuses on his studies as a pathway to a better future but his wish remains. “I wish to see an end to this war, and Al Fasher returns to what it used to be; people can go back home safely.” Children like Azuz and his siblings need a ceasefire NOW.

I feel really pained when I see what children like Azuz are going through. It's one thing to wish and pray all displaced families and affected children will return to normalcy, but that's not enough. Youths and leaders around the world need to join hands and voices together and act; war causes emergency hunger, severe malnutrition, preventable deaths among children and they need to come to an end. God bless UNICEF for these great works... I'm glad Azuz is receiving education amidst all these.

It's so sad what's happening right now in Sudan, I pray they go back to being a peaceful place for people to feel safe and move towards a better future

Education brings light even in the darkest times. Praying for a ceasefire and safety for all children longing to return to normalcy and their homes.
