Several days of torrential rains, storm surges and catastrophic flooding caused by Hurricane Melissa have impacted the lives of more than 700,000 children across the Caribbean. In Jamaica, where Melissa made landfall as a category 5 hurricane and destroyed homes and essential infrastructure, UNICEF is supporting the government to reach more than 284,000 children to address urgent nutrition needs, access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene including mental health support. In Haiti, UNICEF is deploying hygiene and emergency health kits, cash to households at risk and engaging communities. UNICEF is working with national authorities and partners in the affected countries to identify and quickly address the most urgent needs. Nature’s force is immense, but so is human compassion. Hurricane Melissa left devastation in its path — yet UNICEF's rapid action is a reminder that in every crisis, humanity can rise. Over 700,000 children are affected. What they need now is not just aid, but stability, care, and protection.
