“UNICEF and Partners are committed to ending…” This statement is suggestive of a dominant appoach to well meaning intentions but also an important reason why the practice is still very much alive in 2025. Culture is one of the most resillient things there is - especially when change is attempted from the outside by those who have not and do not live it. Apart from protecting itself, it is guarded, protected and preserved by the people who live it! Any meaningful shifts MUST come from within! Otherwise, one will think they have “ended” a practice (tradition) but infact, it will have been hidden from site, from the gaze of the powerful! For many, a skill honed by colonial violence. So, a call to critical reflection and consideration of the “how” of this commitment.

Beyond the physical pain, it robs women of their right to sexual pleasure and bodily autonomy. FGM must be treated as a serious crime — not excused by culture or religion. Strong laws and strict enforcement are needed in every country across the world to hold perpetrators accountable and protect the rights and dignity of every girl.
