It’s deeply painful. Its impacts can last a lifetime. Female genital mutilation (FGM) can cause long-term physical and psychological damage, with serious medical complications. In humanitarian and fragile contexts, the risks associated with FGM may be further exacerbated. UNICEF and partners are committed to ending this human rights violation by 2030, once and for all. #GirlGoals #EndFGM

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is an inhumane and asexual act that causes great physical and psychological harm to girls and women. It is heartbreaking that such practices still exist in this modern era. Many girls are subjected to FGM without their consent, using unsterilized instruments in unsafe environments, which often leads to excessive bleeding, infections, and long-term trauma. Beyond the physical pain, it robs women of their right to sexual pleasure and bodily autonomy. FGM must be treated as a serious crime — not excused by culture or religion. Strong laws and strict enforcement are needed in every country across the world to hold perpetrators accountable and protect the rights and dignity of every girl.

A powerful reminder of why advocacy and awareness must continue. Ending FGM isn’t just a health issue it’s about dignity, safety, and human rights for every girl.

It is sad to know FGM is still prevalent in 2025. People make tradition, not the other way round. So it is in our hands to change the narrative. We can, we will.

No tradition or belief should ever justify pain or fear. Every girl deserves safety, dignity, and the right to grow up whole — in body and spirit. Ending FGM isn’t just a goal for 2030, it’s a duty for all of us today. #EndFGM #HumanRights

“UNICEF and Partners are committed to ending…” This statement is suggestive of a dominant appoach to well meaning intentions but also an important reason why the practice is still very much alive in 2025. Culture is one of the most resillient things there is - especially when change is attempted from the outside by those who have not and do not live it. Apart from protecting itself, it is guarded, protected and preserved by the people who live it! Any meaningful shifts MUST come from within! Otherwise, one will think they have “ended” a practice (tradition) but infact, it will have been hidden from site, from the gaze of the powerful! For many, a skill honed by colonial violence. So, a call to critical reflection and consideration of the “how” of this commitment.
