In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:223), women are likened to a field into which men may enter as they wish. While many Muslim women are unaware of the verse’s implications, interpretations among Muslims generally fall into two views. Some argue that God’s true intent cannot be known. Yet believing Muhammad is the final prophet implies that everything essential has already been revealed—so insisting on “not knowing” seems inconsistent. Others claim God expressed certain matters implicitly, requiring scholars to interpret them. But this too conflicts with the Qur’an’s repeated claim to be a “clear” and “explicit” book. This raises a broader question: Have religions—especially the Abrahamic ones—emerged from patriarchal systems, and do they continue to reinforce them through religious and political institutions?
