UNICEF Timor-Leste’s Post

UNICEF Timor-Leste and UNICEF Australia have been supporting the Government of Timor-Leste through the Ministry of Public Works in partnership with NGO PERMATIL to build climate resilience and to bring water to the communities, schools and health facilities in Timor-Leste. Last week, Bethany Stirling, International Programs Manager (Child Survival) from UNICEF Australia, together with UNICEF Timor-Leste colleagues, visited Suco Maulau of Ainaro Municipality in Timor-Leste, where they observed the water catchment management activities utilising nature-based solutions, implemented by PERMATIL, and the rehabilitation of rural water system in that area. The community-based water retention structures such as check dams and terraces, will help to increase the absorption of rainwater in the ground. Increased amount of ground water sustains the water sources down the hills, even during dry season. Meanwhile the installation of the rural water system is ongoing, and it is expected to be completed within 2025. This water supply system will benefit more than 200 households, which will help families, community members and children to access clean and quality water. ©UNICEF Timor-Leste/2025/DMonemnasi UNICEF Australia Bethany Stirling
