UNICEF Timor-Leste’s Post

On August 25, 2025, UNICEF participated in the Timor-Leste Disability Association (ADTL) Inclusive Youth Camp held in Aileu. The event was honored by the presence of the Prime Minister of Timor-Leste, H.E. Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, along with key government officials, including the Minister of Youth, Sports, Arts, and Culture, H.E. Nelyo Isaac Sarmento; the Secretary of State for Equality, H.E. Elvina de Sousa Carvalho; the PDHJ Ombudsman, Rigoberto Monteiro; and the President of Aileu Municipal Authority, Mr. João Bosco da Costa. Representatives from OXFAM, the Australian Embassy (DFAT), and other senior officials also attended, along with the young people with disabilities who are at the heart of this camp.   Joining the event, João da Costa, the Social Policy Officer of UNICEF, emphasised the importance of youth leadership and the inclusion of children and young people with disabilities. He encouraged participants to use the week to learn from one another, inspire each other, and demonstrate what is possible when opportunities are equal for all. He also stressed that UNICEF Timor-Leste is committed to fully realizing the rights of children and youth with disabilities, in line with the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.   Over 150 youth with disabilities from five municipalities have joined this camp, supported by UNICEF, to learn, share experiences, and strengthen their leadership skills. The camp focuses not only on training but also on empowerment, friendship, and celebrating the talents and dreams of every young person with disabilities.     #InclusiveYouth #YouthLeadership #DisabilityRights #UNICEFTimorLeste #ADTL #NoYoungPersonLeftBehind Soumen Ray Jose Manuel do Karmo Joao Da Costa
