Every day, 18 newborns lose their lives in Papua New Guinea - most from preventable causes like sepsis, asphyxia and prematurity. During her visit to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Port Moresby General Hospital this morning, UNICEF East Asia and Pacific Regional Director, June Kunugi said: “It is inspiring to see hospital staff so dedicated to saving lives and making the most of the equipment they have — and to witness the impact of UNICEF’s support to neonatal care here.” With support from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic of Korea, UNICEF is helping health workers across 10 provinces through a clinical mentorship programme - providing life-saving training, essential equipment, and hope for Papua New Guinea’s tiniest patients.
