💡 On this International #LiteracyDay, we are reminded that literacy is the foundation of all learning – yet globally, 7 out of 10 children still need support to develop strong literacy skills. In Egypt, important steps are being taken to address this. In February 2025, the Ministry of Education and Technical Education (MoETE) launched the National Programme for Developing Arabic Language Skills (NPDA), a nationwide effort to strengthen literacy in Arabic and ensure that every child has the skills they need to learn, grow, and thrive. Over 12 weeks, NPDA reached 199,225 students in Grades 3-6, combining teacher training, structured lessons, and dedicated learning materials. The MoETE led the evaluation through the National Center for Examinations & Educational Evaluation with UNICEF Egypt and UNICEF Innocenti to assess its implementation and impact. Key research results: ✅ Literacy scores increased by 17% (with the largest gains for students who started with the lowest scores). ✅ The share of students scoring zero fell from 1 in 3 to less than 2%. ✅ Girls made even greater progress than boys, especially those starting from behind. ✅ Teachers reported strong uptake of new pedagogical methods, with 95% implementing the programme as designed. The findings are clear: well-designed, structured support works. Institutionalizing Arabic literacy interventions will be vital to help Egypt achieve its goal of halving learning poverty by 2029. 👉 Read the working paper in English and Arabic: https://lnkd.in/dcUEjHrf. #Literacy #FoundationalLiteracyandNumeracy #FLN #Education #EducationResearch #ImplementationResearch #ForEveryChild Thomas Dreesen, Ghalia Ghawi, Sophia Kan, Lara Naber, Ramadan Muhammad Ramadan, Hasib, Muhammad Hasib, Omaima Riyad, Abdullah Zekry, Linda Jones UNICEF Egypt UNICEF Middle East and North Africa

This week, curriculum experts from the Ministries of Education of Kenya and Lesotho, with support from UNICEF Eastern and Southern Africa through the KIX-19 Hub, met in Naivasha, Kenya, for an in-person exchange on inclusive education for children with disabilities in Lesotho. The engagement focused on deepening Kenya’s understanding of Lesotho’s curriculum and education context, applying a disability-inclusive lens to identify key issues and opportunities. This shared analysis will guide the next step: an in-depth technical training in Maseru later this year, where Kenya will support Lesotho’s curriculum reform and adaptation process. This South–South cooperation highlights the power of peer learning: Kenya sharing its experience, Lesotho advancing its reform priorities, and both countries working toward classrooms where no child is left behind. UNICEF remains committed to supporting last mile initiatives — ensuring the most marginalized children, including those with disabilities, have equal opportunities to learn and thrive. This important work is made possible with support of GPE and IDRC. Helene Cron Veronicah Wangui Wongani Grace Taulo, PhD Fred Haga #InclusiveEducation #EducationForAll
