JUDGES COLLOQUIAM: Botswana advances child friendly justice The Government of Botswana, in partnership with UNICEF and UK in Botswana, convened a Judges’ Colloquium under the theme “Reimagining Child-Friendly Justice in Botswana.” The gathering brought together judges, government leaders, the National Children’s Council, UNICEF, and key stakeholders to explore actionable reforms for children in contact with the law - whether as victims, witnesses, or alleged offenders. Discussions focused on aligning Botswana’s justice system with international standards, reviewing the newly developed Standard Operating Procedures, and identifying training needs to strengthen child - sensitive judicial practices. Minister of Justice Hon. Ramaotwana Nelson Ramaotwana emphasised the need for continued collaboration to close gaps in awareness, safeguards, and infrastructure. Judges were called upon to play a pivotal role, as their decisions directly impact custody, protection, juvenile justice, and child welfare outcomes. This event underscores Botswana’s commitment to a justice system where every child’s rights are protected, and their voices heard. Giles Enticknap MBE Kimanzi Muthengi, EdD Nankali M. Great move towards strengthened child protection!!
Powerful to see Botswana taking concrete steps toward reimagining child justice — not just making the system more child-friendly, but fundamentally shifting it so that fewer children enter it in the first place. As UNICEF’s paper on Reimagining Child Justice Systems highlights, the real progress lies in preventing criminalization, prioritizing diversion, and keeping children in safe, supportive environments rather than courtrooms and cells. Kudos to the Government of Botswana, UNICEF Botswana, and partners like UK in Botswana for leading this important dialogue.
