True peace often begins far from negotiation tables—in villages, forests, riversides, and farms where communities live and lead. Ahead of Sunday's #PeaceDay, our Equator Initiative turns the spotlight on Indigenous Peoples and local communities protecting 80% of the planet’s biodiversity. Despite facing disproportionate risks from conflict, they are showing that healing nature is also a pathway to healing each other. From coffee farms in Colombia to forests in Myanmar, from pastoral lands in Ethiopia to the rivers of Ecuador, these #EquatorPrize winners remind us that peace has many forms, but one heartbeat. Powerful reminder that peace and environmental stewardship go hand in hand. Indigenous Peoples and local communities are not only protecting our planet’s biodiversity but also building resilient, peaceful societies from the ground up. Inspiring work by UNDP and the Equator Initiative.
On the occasion of World Peace Day, I would like to share with you one of the most beautiful places in my homeland. The picture you see is Daalo Mountain, located in Sanaag region, Somaliland. It is rich in biodiversity, home to unique plant species found in very few places on earth. The communities living in the forests of Sanaag enjoy lives of peace and happiness, in harmony with nature. 🌎 Happy Peace Day!
