International Program Director Stand.earth & Chair at Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty

The gloves are off now. This new text is the #cop28 presidency tying itself into a pretzel with a jumble of words and multiple loopholes to avoid saying “phase out of fossil fuels”, therefore giving countries the ability to grow fossil fuel production while claiming to address climate change. But it's not over yet. This is just the first text. The majority of countries called for much stronger language than this. The EU is saying it will walk if the deal is not changed! Message your Ministers and ask them to stand firm for a phase out of all fossil fuels that is fair and financed!! https://lnkd.in/gzE6JDQE

In the worst case - let's just do a non-COP Fossil Fuel phase out agreement with the 180 or so countries that do agree. And make pariahs out of the rest, if they don't cooperate.

Finally the EU woke up and showing some integrity. This walk out should've happen a week ago. I really hope it is not too late.

When will we wake up from the collective self-delusion? When will we recognize the enormous scale that is needed? We started 50 years too late. The well-off countries HAVE spent their share of the CO2-budget many years ago. The remaining global CO2 budget with a probability of at least 83% of staying below 1.5 degrees is just under 60 Gton CO2 as of 1. January 2024. We currently emit approx. 40 Gton CO2 per year. Do the last part of the calculation yourself for how quickly the fossil fuels must be phased out.

We should see countries commiting crimes against the environment with activities like nuclear experiments, nuclear weapons in use such as depleted uranium etc fund more into the loss and damage fund 17m was a joke In addition, apologising on certain crimes and neglecting the rest is not fair 42,000 Algerians were used and killed during the nuclear experiments in the algerian sahara Millions also got affected by radioactive poisoning with major environmental catastrophic results No apologies or compensation! Climate justice ⚖️ is fair when it's conducted fairly not selectively with bias standards Further more, the exploitation of natural resources and stealing the wealth of colonised countries combined with the accumulated emissions since the 3rd industrial revolution until today must have accountability results we can't just drop the ball and say let's start from today !

I totally agree that the wording is a disgrace although it was entirely predictable given the Chairman and his corrupt OPEC, Russian, and Chinese allies. They represent countries whose human rights record make Ghengis Khan look like a saint. That said, contact our MPs and government ministers? The people who encouraged and supported over 100 licenses to drill for oil in the North Sea are are in the process of opening new coal pits in the UK? The irony is an embarrassment. I accept that governmental action is necessary. I just don’t believe that it will come from any developed nation. In addition the UN must be held accountable for placing COP meetings in countries such as the UAE and Egypt, plus almost begging international organizations which are largely dependent upon fossil fuels for their production and profit. Corrupt to the core with no intention of helping the poor even in their own countries

There have been 27 non successful COPs since no binding agreements have been achieved. If there were several serious entities (along with EU) participating, they should all have been brave and Frank enough about not going to participate in this, long before the start of COP28. Stop wasting money and time on yet another fossil fuel PR campaign, which is exactly what COP28 is - again.

The EU should end fossil fuel subsidies!

The "starting point" doesn't suggest we should be confident of any clear, impactful, NECESSARY language to be included in the final text. Just another PR exercise for the fossil fuel industry.  Real climate activists need to stop validating these exercises with their participation.  It's not like they have a meaningful seat at the table now.
