A picture is worth a thousand words: in today's Nature you will find some animated visuals signalling the 𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐬 - including (some) parts of the solution space as it is heavily energy sector focused. It concludes with a quote from Climate Policy Initiative's Baysa Naran: "Naran says there is more than enough funding floating around: governments invested nearly $12 trillion in economic relief during the COVID-19 pandemic, and are currently spending more than $1 trillion per year on direct fossil fuel subsidies (or $7 trillion if indirect incentives such as regulatory relief are included). Rolling those subsidies back is no simple matter because of the potential effects on the world’s poorest citizens, Naran says, but it is yet another source of money as the world looks to the future. A draft agreement at the #Cop28 #ClimateSummit has for the first time called on nations to "transition away" from #FossilFuels to lessen the impact of the #ClimateCrisis, though there is no commitment to do so.  The deal, known as the #GlobalStocktakeAgreement, directly addresses the use of fossil fuels for the first time. Representatives from nearly 200 countries agreed to the deal early on Wednesday. While the final agreement was speedily agreed, it was criticised as being too weak due to the strongest wording that could be settled on was only to “call on parties to contribute” to a series of actions to tackle #ClimateChange, “in a just, orderly and equitable manner, accelerating action in this critical decade, so as to achieve #NetZero by 2050 in keeping with the science”. The fossil fuel industry and lobby has played an outsized role in deciding the fate of climate policy discussions and progress for too long. Now is the time for all of us, including employees and companies - especially those at #cop28 - to step in and step up in leading on bold climate policy action, raising the bar on what true climate leadership looks like. "As negotiators at the COP28 climate summit in Dubai debate calls for a global phaseout of fossil fuels, a record number of fossil fuel lobbyists have filled the gathering’s hallways and conference rooms: More than 2,400 conference delegates have ties to the fossil fuel industry...The data is only available thanks to new transparency requirements adopted by the United Nations at the behest of climate advocates, who have argued that the fossil fuel industry takes advantage of lax reporting standards to push its agenda at the annual COPs."
