Today, I submitted my resignation to Facebook. I cannot stand by Facebook’s continued refusal to act on the president’s bigoted messages aimed at radicalizing the American public. I’m scared for my country, and I’m watching my company do nothing to challenge the increasingly dangerous status quo. Now that I’m in search of a new job, I’m reaching out to my network. If anyone’s looking for a software engineer in the SF Bay Area, please get in touch. Here’s a little about me: I graduated in 2019 from Georgia Tech with a BS in Computer Science and a 4.0 GPA. I interned at Facebook for two summers, and since June 2019 I have been at Facebook, working on battling the spread of misinformation. I’m very motivated by opportunities to improve education, and I have experience crafting educational technology both for learners and for educators. My publications detail methods to use haptic technology to teach motor skills. At Tech, I was the head TA for a required computer science class, where I helped to develop homeworks, exams, procedures, and lectures. I’m open to any interesting, high-impact work. Even if you don’t have contacts in the education/social good space, I’d be grateful for your support in connecting me with companies looking to hire someone like me. #blacklivesmatter
Good on your Timothy, all the way from Australia! Based on your resume experience it looks like we come from the same early 20s generation. Reading the comments most of the ones who disagree with your decision to share are baby boomers and beyond. Millennials, Gen-X and beyond have so much fire and energy to speak up to what is right. What I’m soo excited for is when we become the generation of leaders!!! Our values and morals are very different. More so what we view as important in work and personal life is different to baby boomers. The way we see the world and our hungry heart will take the world where it needs to go! ✨✨
You leave a job during an economic depression because your company won't break the CONSTITUTION by disallowing free speech on a public platform? Company's have no place in govt discourse... That's how you get crony capitalism that ppl rightfully complain about. You are basically encouraging companies to use their financial might to divert the law of the land...let me ask you this, would you be okay with Hobby Lobby doing the same thing??? Or Chic-Fil-a??? No, because you are biggotted yourself, and are so caught up on your own echo chamber that you cannot see reality, it's sad. You should fly to ATL and get your money back cuz they taught you zero common sense!
Tim, As you can see from the comments, there are always two sides. The liberals like your decision and the conservatives can’t believe you did what you did. The youth start out as liberals, and most, wise up and slowly become conservatives with age and life’s wisdom. Right now you are so intelligent that your decision was stupid. Look back on this decision in 20 years and see how stupid it was. If you do not find it stupid, you are still a liberal. Liberalism is a mental disease.
Is it just me or is the vast majority of negativity on this post from older, white men. I can't work out whether they are projecting their own incapacity or unwillingness to stand up for their beliefs on someone who has and is prepared to take the consequences or whether they are just too invested in the status quo because it suits them (and only them) and want to protect it. I am intrigued that people also seem to think political opinions are not appropriate on this platform. If we are ever to be real and authentic on what was previously a 'gilded lily' of a platform then we must bring ourselves to the table and that means our principles as well. The days of the 'shiny', one dimensional profiles is over - we want to deal with real people and frankly if we are going to be accepted and work with people we want to work with we as well be rejected or accepted on who we actually are and what we stand for. There are a lot of people in this feed who could do with listening to Timothy rather than simply using his post for their own platform or passive aggressive pretence at wanting to 'protect his career'.
Donald Trump became President in 2016 and you started at FaceBook in 2019. Hmmmm, maybe you should have done a little more research on your employer. Reminds me of the people who buy a house near an airport for 20 bucks and then complain about airplane noise. You are creating your own problems in life by not being deliberate in your actions. If your moral compass is that strong, I would suggest an industry that matches it. Good luck, I would be a hard pass on your candidacy if I were filling positions.
I am getting a chuckle that so many people embedded in capitalism over morale is telling him good luck because he didn’t want to sacrifice his identity for a buck and that he will be looked at as non-hireable ...yet I am seeing job opportunities extended to him on this post. Guess the good luck part worked 😉. We are heading towards new times where the bottom line will not outweigh morale. The old generation that are stuck in their ways will get lost in what’s about to come. Shift change .
I find it HILARIOUS that people on here are stating he will not get another job or he will have difficulty securing another tech job because of his views on political and societal issues. Come on...dude is in tech and worked for one of "The Big 4". With tech jobs on a hiring surge (around 81%) due to COVID19 and remote / work at home slowly becoming mandatory, you guys SERIOUSLY think this young man won't get a job with his experience and credentials? Please...he'll have job offers from start ups and well established tech firms BY NEXT WEEK. I wouldn't be surprised if he already has some lined up as I am typing this comment. He'll be fine. Some of you sound absolutely RIDICULOUS as evidenced by your comments. A lot of these tech companies could care less about your political views or why you left your previous employer as long as you can bring their ideas to reality and increase their bottom line with code. Most of them will be happy and overjoyed they picked up an "ex-Facebook developer". That alone speaks volumes in the tech world.
Wow - you're battling the spread of disinformation. In your 20's Because that's the job that Facebook hired you for and, apparently, Facebook isn't liberal enough for you. New employees need to shut up and learn. You think you're supposed to set policy and, when you can't, you throw this tantrum? You've got a hard road ahead of you, son. Or to put it in South Park terms: Timmy! You're livin' a lie!
This is the definition of social erasure. Whether intentional or not. This negatively co-opts a highly important social issue like Black Lives Matter as a platform to showcase oneself and resume. Only one paragraph mentions the reasoning and support of a great cause, yet the other 85% of a long post is ultimately selling qualifications. Moreover it deliberately uses the hashtag to boost its presence on a highly engaged topic. This is highly insensitive and frankly tone deaf. It would be better to briefly mention the resignation and spend the time talking about why one really truly understands and supports such social issues. Not come off as pretending to. In a separate post highlight qualifications at length and then highlight/pin the post. Interested parties will find you. This is overall pretty disgusting.

#Blacklivesmatter and Trump may not be the brightest tool in the shed. However, it is outright WRONG to state that his messages have radicalised the public or been a precursor to anything that's related to George Floyd/Breonna Taylor!!!! Your President (since I'm a brown man who's not an American citizen) is far far removed from these cases. There seems to be collective delusion amongst the liberal folk of America and progressives. How is a layman with no real political background who became the president responsible for institutional over-policing and police brutality that's been there for Decades???! What about the establishment Democrats who've enabled this system to continue for decades unabated??? In-fact, Trump recently made one of the biggest changes in recent history when it comes to Prison reform and wrongful incarceration of Blacks! Also, you're resigning because Facebook stood firm and let people excercise their freedom of speech. I'm sorry, but it seems extremely narrow-minded and rigid of you. Something clearly typical of a large group of people in your country that's led to these issues boiling over. Truly wierd..
