After graduating college, Netflix co-founder Marc Randolph got a “handwritten list of instructions” from his Dad, he wrote in a 2019 LinkedIn post. 1. Do at least 10% more than you are asked. 2. Never, ever, to anybody, present as fact opinions on things you don’t know. Takes great care and discipline. 3. Be courteous and considerate always — up and down. 4. Don’t knock, don’t complain — stick to constructive, serious criticism. 5. Don’t be afraid to make decisions when you have the facts on which to make them. 6. Quantify where possible. 7. Be open-minded, but skeptical. 8. Be prompt. 🚀

“Your mistakes are your best teachers” is not a phrase that I agree with. I prefer to learn from days without issues, from successful days. If tackle correctly, you can find a lot of learnings from those jobs where things went as planned. These are my suggestions to find great experiences from successful productions: - Document what you did to make things go well. - Be as detailed in your feedback as when things go wrong. - Great days are not perfect, there’s room for improvement. - You’ll have more leverage to ask for extra resources when things went well. - Get feedback from your crew. The ones who made the great day possible. - Be as effusive to congratulate your team as you are when something failed. Learn from your mistakes but don’t miss the chance to double down on what went well.
