As we've experimented and prototyped with generative AI over the past few months, our team at Symbolic has learned a few key truths that we’ve been able to build our company and our initial product around. First, we've seen that in the hands of the right users, generative AI can be used to enlighten and inform. It can be used to develop insights, to create new knowledge, to give fresh perspectives from multiple viewpoints, and to spread factual, context-rich news about what is actually happening in the real world. Teams that work in professional knowledge production can use a brand new set of software primitives — large language models (LLMs), vector databases, retrieval-augmented generation — to rapidly turn original research and analysis into high-quality text artifacts (news reports, essays, scripts, research notes). But static text artifacts are only the beginning, because those same software primitives can enable users to consume and interact with professional knowledge work in new ways. We've also learned that generative AI can and should work for creators, not against them. There are many questions around AI and intellectual property that will work themselves out in courts and legislatures over the coming months and years, but at Symbolic, our conviction is clear: creators and publishers have to get paid. Symbolic’s founders and team members want to live in a world where outstanding publishers and talented creators can not only make a living from high-quality cultural products, but can actually build generational wealth. Theoretical questions around style transfer and influence are far less important to us than designing a system of powerful financial incentives for creators and rightsholders to actively contribute their work to generative AI platforms for training, fine-tuning, and retrieval-augmented generation.
