When I was a kid - I was full of anger, fear, sadness, anxiety, and lots of shame! I didn’t know what I needed - but I knew I felt wildly uncomfortable in my own skin. Despite this - the one place where I consistently felt good enough and valuable - while just being myself - was in the presence of my grandpa. I always knew what was important to my grandpa - and I could experience that he truly valued relationships (he was a very successful businessman - and yet - he was also a dedicated family man - and deeply committed to his community- and everywhere he was - he was fully present - and you could feel the power of his inner clarity and purpose). I did ultimately end up getting help - and my grandpa was a huge motivating force in that. And as I was able to get emotionally and psychologically more healthy - I got a chance to spend a good 10+ years being best friends with him. My grandpa died right before my wedding day - and he never got a chance to meet my 2 kids. However - I now try and carry his legacy forward - by bringing his greatest attribute - Authenticity- into my life, work, and relationships. Because my grandpa had such radical Authenticity - it gave me the freedom to find mine. That’s powerful leadership!

If you truly understand Empathy you will know it's a sentient, intuitive experience. If you are Not in tune with yourself, totally aware of who you are, worts an all, you will never have empathy. Empathy too is not a 'skill' that brings only joy. I can feel the physical pain of people I've met once from miles away. How people feel about me, their intentions towards me is clear as day to me. Whilst they often don't know how they going to behave or aren't consciously clear on their feelings for me yet. I already know. Empathy must not be another buzzword to create more noise. It must be respected, honored as a sentient gift only conscious people who are intentionally working on being a better human every day, can experience. As a management tool it's not going to be a corporate best friend. Empathy is physically, mentally and emotionally draining. Exhaustion after just a few hours in a corporate office is common for Empaths. I wouldn't employ an empath to work in office more than one day per week. It would deprive them, your business of their best. #My2c #Pi Morals are worth more than empathy.

This further points to the short-sightedness of organizations to realize, the very individuals who are responsible for performance and outcomes become your future leaders who have been cultivated and institutionalized to be "producers". Then we wonder why leaders have no empathy. Well, it's self-explanatory at that point. If you want great leaders, you need to cultivate producers who also have empathy, and who knows, you might end up having high producers that end up having amazing customer service who just happen to be right for leadership. To Sinek's share philosophy of many, Start with Why in your organization. I guarantee it's not ONLY, "Make tons of money". I am sure there is some fulfillment in there, identity, and meaningfulness too in your producer's work life. This is where you start to cultivate that fulfillment starts with people and caring for people builds trust and all of which is key to long-term success in any role you will have in your life.

When you speak to senior executives and CEO’s they all tell you how supportive they are, how they promote a supportive culture, but how many do? How many are talking the talk, and don’t give a damn, and their priority is to get the job done!?

If someone has missed 3 straight quarters - it is too late to ask if they are ok. This conversation should have occurred after the first quarter and no later than the second!! Finally, if you tell someone if they miss another quarter "I don't know what is going to happen", you are not being honest with them. You know exactly what is going to happen and you need to tell them too...

Really appreciate this message, and it is so relevant in today's workplace with COVID changing everything up. One thing I have also found is that leadership models and inspires leadership - so showing empathy to your staff will more likely result in them showing the same behaviors as they grow into leadership roles. This is not just about caring for your team, it is also growing your future leaders with the right approach.
