Yep. To distract the masses have them denigrate themselves and become a permanent unproductive underclass in society. But, I won't blame China for it all. Remember Vine? A U.S. company in 2013 lasted 5 yrs. Users did 6-sec loop videos of stupidity for laughs & dances. There were Vine stars, ie. Logan Paul & 'Vine Kids'. TikTok was inspired by Vine. TikTok heavily marketed to U.S. market. Why? America worships fame & fortune. There's a REASON Charli D'Amelio was chosen to be "First TikTok Star" and dance on Fallon show, with another girl's dance who happened to be Black. When I observed Black social media users getting outrage over this, it cause division, I couldn't help think if only they all knew what the app's true mission is. Confucius said, “If one should desire to know whether a kingdom is well governed, if its morals are good or bad, the quality of its music will furnish the answer.” Music. For videos to go viral the algorithm sees which music users are using, the more it feeds the song to new viewers, in turn influence more users to create their own content using that song. Notice which music goes viral? Yes, they took it to another level. Clever. Subtle psych operation? I read enough history to know the answer.

This is not a defense of Tiktok which is definitely collecting info for the Chinese government, and nearly all social media algorithms promote whatever gets the most engagement (like this video) rather than what has the most societal good, but I've seen no evidence that what this speaker is saying about the content on Chinese Tiktok is true. For example, https://youtu.be/8TDgs954LKw Using something as "evidence" that confirms one's priors without evaluating the validity of said evidence is a good way for intelligence analysts (or anyone!) to come to bad conclusions.

I don’t think our culture needed China for this. When I was in high school (well before social media) it was “cool” to care less about school. What was “cool”? Asinine acts. I don’t think we can solve our problems by blaming others. Nothing is preventing Facebook and other US social media from valuing rational content over irrational content, and the sad thing is they may already bias this way (I don’t know).

I blame our increasing inability to tell people they’re idiots without worrying about offense. Being an idiot used to have natural consequences of selection OUT! Now it breeds selection protection in western society. Tik Tok shouldn’t have to tell you that selfies and dances are worthless…society should

Meh. “China has people doing cool science and engineering stuff”. Yeah they’re also putting Uighur in concentration camps. Theyre also stamping out dissidence violently and with some horribly coercive measures. But to reinforce Adam M. Beal’s point it’s essentially CCP facial recognition malware.
