Scale Ireland, with the support of Google, and also Ireland Strategic Investment Fund (ISIF) / National Treasury Management Agency, Enterprise Ireland and Atlantic Bridge, has announced plans to host Ireland’s third Regional Start-up Summit in Limerick next month. The event will be officially launched by the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Simon Coveney, and will focus on the potential and challenges facing start-ups and scaling companies around the country. Scale Ireland is collaborating on the Summit with Dr Briga Hynes, Associate Professor, and Entrepreneurship Lead, and Professor Stephen Kinsella, Professor of Economics, University of Limerick. Early stage businesses have different needs than those of more established companies. Of course! We’ve launched the Accelerate Green: Start program to address the needs of founders developing new business ideas in the sustainability space. 🌱 This programme will run February to May 2024 on site at Boora, Co. Offaly. It will be tailored to the unique needs of early stage, sustainability companies. We have a fully funded PhD position (fees + €22k per annum stipend) available here at the University of Limerick as part of a Horizon Europe funded project (BioFin) being led by my Kemmy Business School U. colleague John Garvey. The student will be supervised by myself and colleagues from the KBS, and will work on their PhD within a large interdisciplinary team.   The PhD topic focuses on the role of Accountancy and Governance Functions to support entities in protecting and restoring biodiversity. There will be a particular focus on the role of financial and governance professionals in compliance with mandatory and optional disclosure requirements vis-à-vis sustainability and biodiversity reporting.    The project has the following research objectives: ●       Better understand the opportunities and gaps in implementing the Sustainable Finance Taxonomy (SFT) and help integrate existing and new certification procedures as well as the data and accounting standards into decision-making processes by integrating such tools and metrics into the design of business models. ●       Understand the financing of biodiversity restoration and protection, aimed at slowing down and reversing biodiversity loss in the broader context of environmentally sustainable development. ●       Understand the contribution of accounting professionals in supporting the implementation of the EU biodiversity strategy for 2030 by helping to put Europe’s biodiversity on the path to recovery by 2030 for the benefit of people, climate, and the planet and by better measurement, monitoring, and management of biodiversity. ●       Identify and understand the features that are necessary for nature-positive investments to qualify for large-scale investment and promotes a holistic approach that considers nature’s essential contributions to other objectives (e.g. water security, health, food) by developing multi-criteria decision making (MCDA) approaches for investors.   We’re looking for students with a background in law, public policy or accounting. I had a great time at the NDRC event in Immersive Software Engineering. Throughout the day I collaborated with my course mates Conor Browne , Josh Sloggett ,Andrew Jaffray and Patrick Walsh to create a start up and then presented our idea to the judges at the end of the day. It was a great learning experience and i look forward to doing more events thanks to everyone at NDRC 👏🔥
