the police need more training really? is training the answer to everything? we need anti-racism training said Starbucks (and after that training, a black man sitting around and not ordering coffee wouldn't make the staff worry?) My company builds training. But, I would refuse to train officers to not put their knee on someone's neck. Why? Because its baloney. Chauvin never expresses human emotion in any picture I have seen. He is cold and unconcerned. Can you train him to be different? Maybe his parents could have when he was small. Too late now. Everything is fixed by "training." Not hiring cold fish to be policemen would be an idea. I got asked by a fast food company to train their people to be nicer to customers. I said "no." I told them to hire nicer people. Building a course to train people is a fine idea. (It is my business after all.) But lately we have gotten the idea that all of society's ills can be fixed through training. Most policemen #training #hiring want to berate you for speeding or for not following the rules. (In the '60s, I was beaten up by the San Francisco police because they told me to sit down and I didn't. While I was being beaten up, 5 other cops offered to help beat me up, even though I was just lying there holding my head.)
Joe, any idea which QSR this might have been? "I got asked by a fast food company to train their people to be nicer to customers. I said "no." I told them to hire nicer people."
Well at least you know why they beat you ... you didn't follow their instructions. Nearly all the highly publicized police shootings have the same factor ... the perp simply didn't follow the officer's instructions. Add a suspect weapon and you have a disaster in the making.
I agree that the way candidates are selected for police academy is a much bigger part of the problem, and the infiltration by "bad apples" isn't going to be solved by training. But I'm not so quick to dismiss the need for better training than they have. A friend of mine who's a retired cop told me that the training now lasts only about half as long as when he was coming up. Plus, whereas in his day if you didn't pass one of the modules (or whatever they are), you were done, buh-bye. And now they let you have a do over. This combination sounds like a double-whammy to me.
Roger, it's not that easy. these are complex problems requiring complex answers. Ultimately, it all boils down to a lack of error culture. So that different groups have good reasons to trust this work again. Because the police depend on these people if they want to solve crimes. A police chief, however, sees himself as a leader and not as someone who also has to take care of his subordinates psychologically, who says to a difficult officer: “Okay, watch out. You have now attracted attention five or six times, for example through violence. We have to tackle that. "
Training is often the communicated corrective action when the root cause is listed as operator error. I would suggest that operator error is a bogus root cause. The issues where we see a need for improvement in the Police Organizations will not be resolved only by training since the vast majority of systems do train for items like , when the cuffs are on the fight is over, you do not are not the judge and jury , etc. I suspect the root causes for the existence of a Bad cop are more than one and it is past time to effectively ID the problem , determine the actual root causes and to take and confirm effective corrective actions. This will require a dealing with reality and not the radical BS from both sides of the issue. All Police are not bad Cops and yet, Bad Cops do exist. While it is a much lesser degree of impact , I learned in the Quality Profession one needs to be very aware of the reality that often on a daily basis you are dealing with Neg. issues and over time this can shape your outlook and perception. Indeed our Police deal with very Neg. issues on a daily basis and being Human this can have an impact on their perceptions. This is not an easy to solve issue but, it is a critical issue to resolve.
The police need better detection of heartless people and those involved in racist groups that us for sure. They also need a longer training period that isn't just about using a weapon and shouting. But it will be very difficult to train out structural racism that's been there for hundreds of years in society. As for other points, I think you can try but it may not work. You're not going to get great candidates at $7/hrs are you?
Over use of force? Yes. The problem is bigger. Ask a Nam Vet if they were trained to kill. How about this...what would have happened if Mr. Floyd lived? Would there still be a firing and charges?
There is a lot of fear of the police, especially in black communities. Police are fearful as well which leads to more fear thus more chance for serious mistakes.
This is not a single solution issue. All of what you have written applies. Scary to learn how little training is given to officers for use of firearms.

I have no comment on the police officer and the death of Mr Floyd. The response about traing in general I disagree with. If someone is lacking education they are going to get it from who ever offers it. So your fastest fry cook is now traing Traing and education is the foundation. Your fast food example, if I don’t get a response to a thank you I offer it’s rude. I don’t think the person was trying to insult me but it did. Traing could fix that for both of us. I think getting someone off the line to educate and train them makes them a better professional.
