the police need more training really? is training the answer to everything? we need anti-racism training said Starbucks (and after that training, a black man sitting around and not ordering coffee wouldn't make the staff worry?) My company builds training. But, I would refuse to train officers to not put their knee on someone's neck. Why? Because its baloney. Chauvin never expresses human emotion in any picture I have seen. He is cold and unconcerned. Can you train him to be different? Maybe his parents could have when he was small. Too late now. Everything is fixed by "training." Not hiring cold fish to be policemen would be an idea. I got asked by a fast food company to train their people to be nicer to customers. I said "no." I told them to hire nicer people. Building a course to train people is a fine idea. (It is my business after all.) But lately we have gotten the idea that all of society's ills can be fixed through training. Most policemen #training #hiring want to berate you for speeding or for not following the rules. (In the '60s, I was beaten up by the San Francisco police because they told me to sit down and I didn't. While I was being beaten up, 5 other cops offered to help beat me up, even though I was just lying there holding my head.)

In Quebec, the kids on this bus are "scholars." Really? or they are etudients (studiers.) Our ideas about education are as outdated as these words. Yet we still ask kids to study. Studying only has to do with learning if you trying to memorize, which is a ridiculous idea. The old ideas are winning: https://lnkd.in/gWr7WtC In Alberta the "new curriculum" was just announced. It is the same as the old curriculum. I have been asked by the government of Alberta to advise on this and have gone there many times to talk with them. Apparently I have had no effect at all. Shocker. If we still think that school is about creating scholars, we are all in trouble.

an argument for opening schools? from a student on the Today show this morning; "Yes. I'm in my junior year. I'm planning to take the SATs. I'm doing college searches. And right now, I'm not learning. I'm not retaining any information." because school is all about getting kids to retain information; very sad; actually she could learn anywhere anytime if that was what she really cared about; but we create school so that kids can pass tests and get into college; and we are willing to risk lives in order to do that .... time to re-think what school is for (except for the free day care part, which is certainly the real issue) we could provide free day care without pretending it is education
