Design Studio | vol. 5 | 2022 Experimental Realism: (Design) Fictions and Futures edited by gem barton from RIBABooks: https://lnkd.in/gcWWf2iX The experimental provides architects with a vital means to test ideas and the untried. Like authors and artists, architects harness the power of fiction to explore alternative models of society and push the boundaries of the possible. By injecting the experimental with a new realism, however, speculative design has the potential to advance new inclusive, equitable and desirable futures. This volume advocates the inclusion of the visionary in the architectural design process. It explores the real-world application of near-future fantastical storytelling and the power of imaginative literacy. Departing from unrealistic utopian or dystopian visions, they empower plural design reactions in response to real-life scenarios. Features: Phil Balagtas, Nicolay Boyadjiev, Benjamin H. Bratton, Dana Barale Burdman, Tom Greenall, Anab Jain, Nicola Koller, Matteo Mastrandrea, César Reyes Nájera, Kathy Nothstine, Ethel Baraona Pohl, Anna Pompermaier, Ayesha Silburn, Phoebe Walton, Matt Ward and Liam Young. #architecture #design #studio #inclusivity #architecturaldesign #future #architects #inclusion #experimental

“Councils played a central role in housing provision throughout most of the 20th century… This is a fascinating and important book, in many ways an extension of Boughton’s 2019 book charting the rise and fall of council housing. It not only represents an uplifting story of social progress but is also something of a lament. While there are currently some interesting estates under development, the high-water mark has passed, and it’s a harsher – in spite of being a generally more affluent – world in which social housing exists.” - Building Design. --- A History of Council Housing in 100 Estates by John Boughton --- Available at RIBA Books: https://lnkd.in/dSGxXQNM Read the review: https://lnkd.in/d3-m-PaB

I got my copy! I’m featured in a fantastic new book published by RIBA Publishing it looks fantastic, so proud to have been included. My chapter that I wrote talks the reader through my full drawing process, influences and top tips for digital architectural illustration in Procreate. There’s an incredible array of talented people included in this book all talking through their drawing process, I’d highly recommend this book if you’re looking to learn new skills or just find it interesting seeing how other people work - I personally love seeing how other artists create their pieces and their thought processes. The book is available to order from Riba Books here: https://lnkd.in/eUMxWfRB and it will be available elsewhere soon. Hamza Shaikh . 📢 "Another must-have if you are thinking about going it alone and focusing on a more agile business model that is primed for the modern age." - Chris Simmons on Design Your Life ----- Check out this wonderful recommendation for Design your life: An architect's guide to achieving a work/life balance by Clare Nash RIBA FRSA --- Bursting with tips, ideas and how-to's on all aspects of designing a working life that suits you and your business, it explains in clear and accessible language how to avoid the common pitfalls of long hours and low pay. --- BUY: https://lnkd.in/gpqnwj2U
Part 2 of Architects Instruction Book Club; Design Your Life: An Architects guide to achieving a work/life balance. I was instantly impressed with the author Clare Nash RIBA FRSA ethos in this book. She speaks about all the right things in terms of contemporary practice; themes of remote and flexible working, working with a young family and trusting staff members around their results rather than hours. This RIBA Publishing book is another must-have if you are thinking about going it alone and focusing on a more agile business model that is primed for the modern age. Clare also references many of the bibles of business and productivity over the 9 chapters whilst speaking frankly about her journey. There is also a helpful section at the end of the book at explores several different contemporary Architecture practices and their different business models and work ethos including practices such as Office S&M and Gbolade Design Studio. If I wasn’t already convinced with the text there are tons of beautiful illustrations that pepper the book, they say don’t judge a book by its cover, luckily this has got a great one. #architect #architecture #architects #riba #ribapublishing #career #worklife #books
