🚀 SPACE PROPULSION: Project.    Finally I can share the study and work done with my team on the final project of the course "Space Propulsion" taught by Professor Stefano Mungiguerra.   The main purpose of this project was to define an alternative sizing to the now decommissioned Soviet Proton-K launcher, focusing on a specific and important Soviet mission on the exploration of Venus which used such a launcher: Venera 9. The alternative sizing included modifying the hypergolic propellant pair used in the Proton-K with the LOX-LCH4 pair to support simpler handling and improved propulsive performance, while maintaining the original mission profile and the Thrust/Weight parameter. Attached is the final presentation where one can find the workflow followed during the sizing, the assumptions considered, and the results obtained. Joining me on this inspiring academic challenge, Donato Parisi and Christian Taddeo were two exceptional colleagues. I usually don’t reach out for anything work-related but would love some help 🛰️ Can anyone give a suggestion on a company willing to work with a university project to provide a passive, unfurling fiberglass “tape measure” deployer? The specifications for the deployer are outlined below: The deployer must support A Langmuir probe will be deployed approximately 1.75m from the spacecraft body by a deployable fiberglass or otherwise non-conductive boom structure. This probe will serve to measure both local ion density and spacecraft charge potential. The Langmuir probe will be an exposed Tungsten electrode roughly 1/8” in diameter and 2-3” in length. The mass of the exposed electrode comes out to roughly 12-grams. An insulative mount will connect the probe electrode to the boom structure and provide an electrical connection to the deployed wire. Since an interface between the electrode and mount must exist, the overall mass of the tungsten rod could be greater than that of the exposed electrode. The probe will require an electrical connection (wire) to the spacecraft body and PCB inside. Because of this, the boom must support a wire that extends along with the structure. The overall volume of the deployer must not exceed 1U because of volume restrictions of the 6U (2x3U) CubeSat. We are running into issues with TRL and looking at TRL 7+ (preferably 8+). Semi-Analytical Attitude Propagation for Earth Orbiting Objects Irene Cavallari, Jinglang Feng, Massimiliano Vasile We develop an averaged dynamical model suitable to study the long-term attitude motion of Earth orbiting objects with general geometries, considering the major effects of gravity-gradient, residual magnetic, and light-pressure torques. The equations of attitude motion are expressed in Sadov variables. To develop the semi-analytical theory, the equations of motion are averaged over the Sadov angles and the orbital mean anomaly. The transformation from the original osculating attitude variables to mean variables is determined by employing a Lie series technique. This is also useful for estimating the error used to improve the accuracy of the solution. Furthermore, we introduce an alternative set of variables, that removes one of the singularities in the formulation in Sadov variables. The results of the numerical tests demonstrate that the developed model provides a good balance between accuracy and computational cost. 🗞 Electronic News! 🗞 The US space agency NASA is currently conducting rigorous testing on the radiation performance of power MOSFETs from Infineon Technologies in preparation for the upcoming Europa Clipper mission to Jupiter. These power MOSFETs, acquired through Infineon's purchase of International Rectifier, play a crucial role in the spacecraft's electrical power systems for the mission. Engineers at NASA are focusing their testing efforts at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, as well as at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory and NASA's Goddard Space Flight Centre in Maryland.
