Rab athlete Angus Kille has made a free ascent of El Niño (8a+ / 5.13b/c) on El Capitan in Yosemite National Park, on a big walling expedition with partner Hazel Findlay. "El Niño follows a free line up the southeast face of El Capitan, wandering over the 'North America' feature like the eponymous weather pattern. It covers delicate slabs, loose and adventurous walls and wild roofs that feel a long way from the well-travelled southwest face. There are few easy pitches, and even they aren't giveaways. The Pineapple Express variation avoids a short rappel section with an impressive crux pitch that goes at about 8a+ (5.13b/c). Big walling is really immersive: you're living on the wall and every effort you make has got to help you go upwards. It means that the challenge of free climbing doesn't hinge on one or two variables, it depends on you bringing loads of things together and being consistent. Falling even on an easy or a safe pitch could set you back a long way. You don't just have to climb the hard pitches, you've got to do them reliably, for breakfast, before the sun comes up, and then onsight through a bunch more and haul your kit to the next bivi. Kendal Mountain Events Festival kicks off next week for a celebration of outdoor film, literature, and culture. Rab athlete Krister Kopala will be joining us for the festival for a screening of his film, The White Giant' which documents his quest for ground breaking first snowboard descents of three of the steepest lines on Jiehkkevárri in Norway’s Lyngen Alps. Krister will also be hosting a talk at the screening as part of the Nidecker Snowboards Snow Night on Friday 17th November at 8pm in Kendal Leisure Centre, where he will share stories and insights into what it takes to push boundaries and seek out ever gnarlier descents.
