Empathy is an important skill for everyone to have. In marketing where there is a need to bring in revenue and get customers to buy stuff, empathy is an underrated skill. Lack of empathy leads to underhanded tactics like #darkpatterns (I have a post on dark patterns linked in the comments). Loyalty is the reward for being an empathetic professional or company. Last year, Etsy did something that many companies never do. They gave their customers an option to opt out of their Mother's and Father's Days holiday marketing emails ( I have an article on this linked in the comments). And this year, they're doing the same thing with Valentine's Day. This is Etsy telling customers: - we care about you. - we don't want to spam you with irrelevant marketing emails. - we are giving you a choice. And we will respect that choice. And guess what, Etsy won't be losing sales because they're being empathetic with customers. On the contrary, customers will think of Etsy when they want to actually buy something. I read a post here today that said: Customers buy when they're ready, not when you want them to. And empathy goes a long way in making sure that customers buy from you when they're ready to. Do you think more empathy is needed in the professional world? #marketing #holidaymarketing #empathy #emailmarketing

Yes! I would personally love to see *opt ins* for things like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. - Let’s not assume that all subscribers having living parents. - Let’s not assume that recipients aren’t aching with the recent loss of a child, or with ongoing infertility. (Those emails still hit me like a brick even years after losing my folks.) #empathy

Whether this is a marketing ploy or genuine empathy it certainly seems like a more sensitive way to do business. Reintroduce humanity.

The world needs more empathy, period. If we can each apply it to our disciplines, we could make such an impact.
