In China's recent efforts to save face and re-write the script of Covid-19 framing itself as the hero of the foreign bug, local businesses are stuck between a rock and a hard place. In Guangzhou Yuexiu and Haizhu districts, restaurants are being visited by local authorities and instructed to "refuse dine-in service to foreigners, especially black people." Yes, that's a direct quote.
On one hand, our business operates as a guest in China and has always tried best to comply with local policy.
On the other hand, I come from a long line of teachers, parents, and previous bosses that all believed very strongly in racial equality.
Therefore we are politely responding for the local authorities to go fuck themselves.
We just won't operate anywhere in which our business is encouraged to discriminate even if we get shut down for it.
