Appreciate Jeff Selingo's analysis of Berry. He writes that "Berry College has redefined the term ‘student worker’ through its LifeWorks program, which places applicants in one of 180 departments to learn practical job skills while earning a paycheck.”
In author and journalist Jeff Selingo's new college admissions book “Dream School”, families are encouraged to drop the “Top 25 or bust” mindset and seek out hidden-gem colleges with value and rich opportunities. Berry College is one of only 75 colleges in the book. Selingo notes that Berry has redefined the term “student worker” through its LifeWorks program, saying “Berry College outshines its peers on the National Survey of Student Engagement.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/ei_zNqdN

Berry College was recently highlighted as a “Dream School” for its distinctive approach to learning that integrates head, heart, and hands. At the Berry Center for Integrity in Leadership (BCIL), we see that mission come to life every day as faculty and staff intentionally shape the character and intellect of students. Recognition like this reflects more than outcomes—it reflects a campus culture where character, purpose, and belonging are intentionally cultivated through the daily investments of our faculty and staff in the intellectual, moral, and practical formation of every student. During Fall Break, 18 faculty and staff joined BCIL’s Building Character Workshop—a one-day initiative that helps educators connect their teaching, coaching, mentoring, and supervision to the cultivation of virtue as excellence in thought, character, and action. Participants identified the virtues most relevant to their work, practiced writing virtue-informed learning goals, and explored practical ways to form student character through daily habits of teaching, coaching, and leadership. Grateful to all who invested the day in this shared work—and especially to David Barr, Coleman Fannin, Eric R. Kushins, and Calli O'Neal for developing and leading sessions. A warm thank you as well to The Program for Leadership and Character at Wake Forest University for their inspiring example and resources through the Educating Character Initiative. #BuildingCharacter #LeadershipDevelopment #HigherEducation #CharacterFormation #BerryCollege

Some good push back by Phil Hill about The New York Times piece below. Online education is the present and future. But this doesn't mean that traditional teaching methods have to suffer. https://lnkd.in/gsFh2uD9
Two weeks ago, The New York Times published a Guest Essay by Daniel Seddiqui claiming community colleges have “lost their way” by embracing online education. The problem? The author cited no evidence, and the piece ignored actual research — including studies on the very college system being criticized This was a beautiful argument of belief unburdened by understanding or evidence. This isn’t about disagreeing with a perspective; it’s about the standards of national media when shaping public opinion on education. If you’re going to use your platform to critique entire systems, the minimum expectation should be to engage with facts. I unpack what was missed, what the data actually show, and why higher ed conversations suffer when editorial shortcuts replace reporting. Read the full commentary here: 👉 https://lnkd.in/gvKA5YfK

6dFascinating discussion. And glad to see my undergrad alma mater (A&M) getting some academic recognition, with a position almost identical to the current AP football poll!
