Kirsten Morel’s Post
Here's a question...What is the strongest performing growth sector of Jersey's economy? Sadly, it's not finance, nor digital, nor any other productive economic sector. The strongest performing growth sector of Jersey's economy is... rental income of private households. Take a look at the chart of GVA by sector, below. I've not included every sector as it becomes messy but I've double-checked and no sector has grown over the past 15 years as strongly as rent (the purple line) has. This is not a chart describing a healthy economy. Finance has flat-lined. Rising interest rates will help inject more money into the sector but this is clearly out of our control. Digital (other business activities) was beginning to show gradual sustained growth until the pandemic hit. After rent, the next strongest growth sector is government (public administration), the light blue line. Construction has also grown ahead of others. This tells us a number of things. 1) We have not diversified Jersey's economy anywhere close to enough. Despite diversification being talked about for the past 20 yrs or so, no government has invested seriously in diversification. 2) There's a massive wealth transfer from those without property to those with property, which is also a wealth transfer from the younger generation to older generations. 3) Jersey is losing its entrepreneurial culture. Rent is very far from entrepreneurial. 4) Jersey's economy is not in a healthy place. We need to invest heavily in diversification, creativity & innovation. It is no longer sufficient to play a little around the edges and hope that things work out. We must help islanders start new businesses by enabling them to access new markets, removing barriers to trade, reducing regulation on small businesses, encouraging entrepreneurship by providing low-rent premises in an incubator style that will not bankrupt someone should their business fail. 5) Jersey needs to become a trading island again. 6) We need to do more to attract high-value, low-footprint businesses. 7) We need to make Jersey's name synonymous with high quality products and services and sustainability. By marketing the island in this way, we can ensure our products and services always attract a premium. 8) We need to develop the skills of all islanders. Despite nice things being said, government has never sufficiently invested in skills. 9) Jersey will only achieve key policies such as net zero carbon emissions and sustainable transport with the success of the private sector in these areas. Govt must see the private sector as its key partner for the "green economic revolution". 10) Agriculture needs investment. The island must pay for the public goods it receives from agriculture and govt must support the island's farms by doing all it can to encourage the buying of local produce. 11) Government must see itself as the island's biggest customer and should ensure that procurement is Jersey-focused. #jerseyci #economy #jerseybusiness

I'm delighted with the mini budget. Raising tax thresholds to help islanders deal with the cost of living was a key manifesto pledge of mine and, along with the other measures included, the budget shows the Council of Ministers is acting strongly to help islanders.
As part of the Government’s 100-Day plan, today the Minister for Treasury and Resources and the Minister for Social Security have announced a proposed Mini Budget to put money back in your pocket. The proposed Mini Budget is an extensive package of measures to address the cost of living crisis. The Minister for Treasury and Resources, Deputy Ian Gorst, said: “Its key aim is to address the current cost of living crisis for Islanders and particularly those who are being hardest hit.” Find out more: https://bit.ly/3Skm7Az #100dayplan
Thank you to everyone who voted today and to everyone who helped me, supported me, voted for me. I'm truly humbled that you have all placed your faith in me and I promise I'll work hard to repay it. Jersey can have a bright and prosperous future and I want to help us all create it. #JSY22
The next government must be laser-focused on helping islanders manage the cost of living. Raising tax thresholds will put hundreds of pounds back in the pockets of islanders. If the Treasury Minister won't do this, I'll lodge my own amendment to the next budget. #jsy22
Everyday, I'm being told stories about the enormous unnecessary stress caused by the way government communicates with us. I want to change this so we can all feel that the government actually cares. #jsy22 #govtcomms
We need to support farming in Jersey. Without farming, the island will change forever. I launched the new Rural Economy Framework and am making sure it is backed by the funds it needs to succeed. If I'm elected, I'll continue to speak on behalf of farmers and will ensure the next government continues to increase funding for all farmers, from organic smallholders to the largest growers and dairy herds. One of the most important elements of the new strategy is its drive to see continual environmental improvement. Farming has a bright future, as long as we all continue to support it. #jsy22 #farming
There's no doubt that the lack of Senators in this election is one of the most common issues that I'm hearing about from voters in Trinity, St John and St Lawrence. I completely understand and will support suitable proposals to bring back Senators to the States.
Despite the challenge of Covid and the struggle to recruit staff, Jersey's retail centres are standing firm. This shows how important it is to support local businesses. https://lnkd.in/e5fUjNMU
Just to ensure everyone knows, I am standing as an independent candidate.
Due to our administrative error, Kirsten Morel has been shown as a member of a political party on page 21 of the St John, St Lawrence and Trinity manifesto booklet. This is not correct and Kirsten Morel is standing as an independent candidate. A double-sided flyer will be sent out to St John, St Lawrence and Trinity households with Kirsten Morel's correct details (not a reprint of the entire booklet). We are issuing a new booklet as unfortunately the majority of booklets within this constituency have already been delivered. Vote.je sincerely apologises for this mistake.
