There is this assumption, give people a desk, conference rooms, that constitutes a good office. We need to move beyond that .. 'Is the space in service to the people & is it serving them well?' - Ryan Anderson We often come back to belonging & wellbeing. It sounds soft & squishy to some people, but it's about fostering a sense of community, that people can be their whole selves - Ryan Anderson There are things that you can do with design to say, "We get it, We gotcha" In terms of physical, cognitive, & social wellbeing, there's a variety of really interesting things you get into - Ryan Anderson We're seeing more outdoor space or biophilic design, bringing outdoor elements like plants, natural lighting into a space. There are so many opportunities to take a space and make it better - Ryan Anderson ---------------------- Thrilled to release Episode 3 of Work 20XX, with our very special guest Ryan Anderson of MillerKnoll. I was excited when Ryan confirmed, even before immersing myself in the world of design, in spaces, places, facilities, and real estate, in pursuit of helping people do their best work. What were cost centers are shifting the business unit performance metrics from spreadsheet-based utilization to focusing on human productivity. Organizational principals revolve around activity-based thinking, moving away from one size fits all average (open office) to a micro-segmentation around human behaviors, be it focused solo work, team building, or heavy collaboration, or simply resting for a spell. Thanks for the conversation Ryan. "moving away from one size fits all average (open office) to a micro-segmentation around human behaviors". It's been interesting to watch Circuit Launch grow, where a big open space married with individual/company enclosed offices and communal labs afforded a living experiment of how people actually use space. There is no one size fits all, and there are dimensions of personality, activity, privacy, confidence, and more that motivate someone to choose a particular space at any given moment. It gets super interesting at the margins, where the intentional spaces merge and those areas becomes their own space. Also interesting, folks choosing to be in one space while wanting to be close to, but not participate, in another. Alex Dantas Dan O'Mara Brandon Toomey
My vocabulary now includes "Bürolandschaft"!
Thank you for having my Jeff - it was a pleasure!
Saying "we get it, we gotcha" with office space. More things in life need to be this thoughtfully designed :->
Untethered and human-centric—says it all right there...but Ryan Anderson shares way too much actionable genius to stop here or at the title: https://webexahead.webex.com/untethered-and-human-centric-moving-beyond-utilization-optimization-to-productivity/
The office is a huge part of the employee experience. Companies have to ensure that the space they’re offering caters to their employees’ needs. It’s never just about the space. There has to be something about the office design that motivates employees to work there.
