Today I was thinking of what my son said to me: "people online are not your friends." Yes, I see that. I learned this when I was invited to some networking groups. They turned out to be just pods and groups that wanted to sell me something. In real life and online, there are both genuine and fake people. The way I recognize them is by their values. Fake people hang around for the free food and parties. When they don't think you are going to give them any more handouts, they disappear. Genuine friends check in, send little messages to brighten your day, and generally are there for you rain or shine. Sometimes I do wonder about people's behavior, but the essential is that I try to be a good friend. Surround yourself with people who answer DMs, who check in to just ask how you've been, who don't forget to send a birthday note, and who regularly support you in small ways. I am growing my entrepreneur community based on my values of GENUINE care. And while we are still small, the people are top notch! Building a business online can be lonely but we have accountability, support, and true connections. Curate your social circles to your biggest supporters and don't waste one ounce of sadness on the other relationships lost. Why am I sharing stories of Kiddush Hashem (Sanctification of G-d's name)? Isn't it bragging? Doesn't it lose its value? These are good questions. Let me explain what's going on here. Kiddush Hashem (Sanctification of G-d's name) is one of the most important values in Judaism. It means acting in a way that reflects G-d's goodness to His creation. I founded the Living Kiddush Hashem organization to raise awareness of this mindset. So is it appropriate to proactively and publicly spread stories of Kiddush Hashem? A number of years ago, Rabbi Shraga Freedman, (our rabbinic leader at the Living Kiddush Hashem foundation), asked Rabbi Noach Muroff how it happened that he was catapulted into national headlines after returning $98,000 which he had found in a desk that he had purchased secondhand? Rabbi Muroff shared with him the following incredible anecdote: “I asked Rav Shmuel Kamenetsky whether the story should be publicized. The rosh yeshivah advised me to publicize it as much as possible, and even to take it to a national news network. He even ruled that I should accept an invitation to appear on a very popular television talk show." Rav Kamenetsky explained that "since every negative story involving a religious Jew receives widespread coverage, it is important to pursue similar coverage for a positive event to counter and repair the chillul Hashem (desecration of G-d's Name).” The world needs to be reminded of who we are, and we need to remind ourselves of who we are. It's not about bragging. What I practice is not exceptional. Acting like a mentch. Treating every human being with dignity and respect. These are values that every Jew is taught and practices from childhood. Let's raise awareness, celebrate our values, and strengthen our commitment together. Have a great day! #LivingKiddushHashem
